Help...Lost third gear

Hi,

I have a Clio 16v and it has lost third gear? The rest are fine. Does it sound like a knackared gearbox or could it be anything else?? Is it a know or common fault?

Hi,

I tried the other forums but they appeared to be locked!

Noises. There was a noise but I thought it might have been a CV or bearing. Maybe I was wrong?!!!

It it easy to replace the gearbox? Do I need to take the engine out? How much are replacements? Sorry for all the questions but I need help. TIA

i went through 4 gear box's in my valver over about 4 years, cost anywhere between £400 to £800(including a clutch)

my third gear went. It was the gearbox for me, god damn gearboxs, i was racing too when it happened, looked a right loser with all the bad boys watching too.

Dont you hate it when that happens?

How easy are they to fit? Doesn't seem to be much room to move in the engine bay!!!! I am pretty confident but have never done one on a Clio 16v.

well i took mine to a renault specialist and they quoted me 600 hundred pound just for the labour. They said the engine had to come out. Thought that was a bit ott.
I sourced a gearbox from the net(sorry cant remember site) for £180, bit of a gamble but it payed off.
Then i payed my local garage £130 to do it. Oh and a new clutch!
They said they just jacked the engine up and it wasnt that hard to do and my car was back to normal.

im having mine completely rebuilt with all new parts, £900 though, but getting a sh one, is a big risk imo

I wouldn't bother with a new 16V box I'd get a Williams box which is stronger £450 from Renault if you ask about. Second hand 16V boxes are cheap fitment can take some time to fit but you don't need to take the engine out. Also when you swop gearbox a lot of people also swop clutches. If you do have the engine out the cambelts can be changed easily so it you near cambelt time might be an idea to swop that as well.

Change your box oil and see what happens, also check for the amount of fillings in the old oil
