Hot Gearbox = no shifting. Problem?

  Cliosport 182
Hi All,

New to the forums and a new Clio owner. I bought a 182 a couple of weeks ago and have been enjoying driving the car. However, I took the car on a road trip and came across a problem. After driving at 75 - 80 mph for 1 - 2 hours it gets harder and harder to change gears. It starts with 3rd gear, but also effects 5th too. The gear lever goes 90% of the way in but then stops and it doesnt go into gear. If I slow down for a while, or leave the car overnight, the problem goes away. Besides that, the gearbox shifts fine and doesnt crunch when changing gears.

I'm guessing the gearbox oil is getting hot and causing problems shifting but the car only has 11 000mi on it, so I dont think that the oil should be due for replacement. I'll be changing the oil to see if this fixes it, unless someone can suggest a different cause of the problem. I'm hoping the gearbox doesnt need replacing.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Thanks,
Daniel

Wrong gearbox oil maybe? I know that people get problems unless they get the right variant (75W80)

Thats what I think, but its only got 11000 miles on it, so I dont think the oil has been changed, but who knows what the previous owner has done.

as said change the oil anyway, best thing to do before you start spending money having the gearbox out for inspection.

New gearbox oil made mine better, i replaced it at 13k anyway when i picked up the car, the oil will be near 3 years old now if not older get it done, but use the proper stuff.

^ You would think that but 3rd is the weak gears in these and usually if you have a problem with the 3rd syncro a gear oil change does help to an extent.

Problem solved! My car had an over filled gearbox (I guess from factory)!

Thanks to K-Tec for sorting it.

No thanks to the sh*te Renault dealership that had my car for 2 days and still couldnt sort out the problem... they even lied to me saying that they had checked the gearbox oil level... useless morons!

Renault dealers seem to be the last place to take your car for maintenance. I talked with a guy some weeks ago who has started his own garage. He had been working for VW for 15 years and he really got fed up with the moneymaking policies of these companies (like reno) because the maintenance is where they really also trie to make as much dough as they can..

I would take mine to a specialist .. Only time i go to the dealers is when i need parts :rasp:

I'll be spending another 80+ because i'll be wanting the original Cup splitter soon (busted it on a cerb); been thinking about it and waiting for over a year to make the decision ; hate the robbing f**kers

iirc 5th gear is the gear that causes issues when the gearbox oil is LOW so makes sence it was causing bother when it was overfilled.

possibly had a n/s driveshaft (need to drain oil)
