losing water/overheating

Over the last week or so I have been constantly having to fill up the water bottle in the engine bay and on occasion the engine has been over heating.

Obviously theres a leak but could anyone tell me the most likely part or area where it would leak, it's a mk1 172.
Already skint this month so trying to sort the problem myself rather than take it to a garage

it could leak from anywhere, have a look!
don't cook that engine whatever you do!

Only leak once its running? Watch it you dont want a mayo factory

I had a similar problem, it turned out to be the pressure cap on the expansion tank that was faulty causing the water the boil up and leak out of the top of the bottle.

If you system doesnt hold its pressure the water boils at a lower temperature and the rest follows.

Worth a try but as said before it could be loads of stuff.
