My Clio Options

  S4 (320bhp) + Clio 16v

Right i got a clio 16v in met silver. To me looks good bodywise. Has subtle mods but looks good. The other night the car just stopped selecting gears. thought it might be the clutch but have found out its the gear box and diff are dead.

What are my options??? Baring in mine i have been quoted about a grand or so to fix it!

1. Get the work done on the car!

2. Wait for a williams lump and box

3. get a box and diff and fit it myself (How hard is it on the 16v)

4. Break the car and sell it in bits

5. Sell it broken and loose money

6. ???

What do u all think is my best option????????????? Im gutted ive only had it 3 months or so!

yer i no. for now i might be getting a second hand box and fitting it but i do want the 2.0 conversion. would it be worth it with a sdt williams engine in there? or would it be best to do a bit of work to it. what i really want is a williams with throttle bodies. somethign rapid

if your really love your clio. then go for no.2, and obvioulsy if you can afford it. Its a lot of effort tryin to sell the bits separetly, and if your gonna spend a grand on repairing it, u may aswell spend it and maybe a bit more on a top quality engine conversion.

Some guy did a 1.6 8v megane conversion - looked mint i thought.

Yer im really stuck now. Duno what to do! I do love the looks of my valver and i could do with that extra bit of power! What am i looking at for a williams engine plus a bit of work to make it a good one with a bit more power??

Personally id go for number two but youve obviously been bitten by the 2ltr bug!

With this in mind stick a new box in (16v or willy one), then get a megane bottom end fitted later - this will be as fast as a willy lump, probably in better nick and a good bit cheaper (as you could sell the few parts you wont need). Doing the conversion gradually will also give you more options - "spread the conversion cost" so to speak!

Either way, its engine out time....

Willy engines seem to be just shy of 1k and obviously mods (ie chip, cams and headwork) will be the same as for your valver.

FYI You could pick a 2ltr megane engine up for under 450 m8! Basically you could have its bottom end mated to your 1.8 head, the whole thing chiped and fitted properly for about what a willy engine may set you back (almost).

is it just as simple as bolting on the bottom end. how much work involved. is it noticable from the outside like for insurance purposes? What power would i be lookign at? Decisions

I know a guy near us that is very reputable in recon and remanufactured gearbox/parts. He told me that valvers are prone to throwing the diff out if hamered in first gear. He is also very good value i think i remember it was about £600 for a new complete valver box with garantee maybe less. The reason i am telling you this is because he was recomended to me buy a friend and the local renault dealers as being the man to talk to with a gearbox problem. He advised me to put fully synthetic/auto transmition fluid in my old RT and it cured the problem of not being able to select gears.

Hes based near Notts so may be a drive but i suspect it will be worth it regards price. The company is Eddy Rose gearbox specialists. Hope this helps

A few people have done the megane 2ltr conversion on here as far as i know. I think basically you just bolt the megane bottom end on to the 1.8 16v head. You will need to use the 1.8 flywheel, get a williams starter (smaller bodied) and a suitable chip to enable the 1.8 ECU to work this combination.

As for the insurance issue, no i dont think you could tell - youre keeping your top end so it would look as it is ATM. Obviously the engine number would be different but i dont think you can even see it anyway as theres no space! Failing that, i think the tag with the engine number is just riveted on so i suppose it would not be unusual for it to be "corroded off" and missing...!

Power would be comparable with a willy - more if you cam/gasflow your 1.8 head while you scout for a good bottom end and nothing would be wasted from that point of view. I think the main bonus is availabilty of the megane engine and the price issue...... Do a search on here though for more info...

Right, now this may sound a bit drastic, but read on! :D

Id start by buying a crap car for £250 - you know the sort that will be worth just the same in about 6 months.

Then, Id begin the job in earnest. To be honest, Im really envious of you having a silver 16V - its the perfect base point for what Ive always wanted to do... make a Group A rally car replica! (the one before the Clio Maxi though).

Get the engine fixed, maybe drop the F7R 2.0 in there (Renault Sport used both the 1.8 and 2.0 in the Group A car) and start stripping the interior. Id take all the door and interior trims off - leaving just the dash top, but taking the glovebox and lower dash. Fit a rollcage and some buckets. The get some refurbiushed Phase1 or 2 wheels and lower it a little on some proper coilovers.

Hey presto! A proper rally car replica with true competition abilities and many illustrious victories!

Alright mate what year is your 16valve mate, is it a newish one!? As you put your foot on the clutch did it just stay routed to the floor!?

  S4 (320bhp) + Clio 16v

nah it was just like normal mate. put it down then back up with a few revs and it was like i still had my foot down! on the clutch, just reved right up! Its an M reg mate. Y

Oh right, cause on my k plate 16v, ive had two clutch cables go on me now as it is a common fault on the car so i though it may be that. thats harsh its gone like that after only a few months!!?

yer its on 100k mate. I wouldnt say abused but it a fast little car. i didnt buy it to drive slow or i would have kept the little 1.1 punto. But its never pops out of gears or stuff like that so im hoping just the diff needs doing not the whole lot. Will see! So much money.

tom if it was me i would find the bloke that had the car before me and make him pay for a new box as he had the car the longest, Hnmm i whonder who that could be :D

if it was me i would replace the box for starters and then learn how to drive without ramping it in every gear !

then think about 2.0 conv or maybee a turbo conversion!
