My EP3

Now I've actually got things to talk about on this car I figured I should make a proper thread for it as half the folks on here don't own a Clio anymore anyway. :innocent:
Anyway I bought the car off a friend in June. Him and his better half owned the car for about 3 years and he takes mechanical OCD to a new level - he is the reason I bought the car. Everything is tight and smooth.

IMG-20140617-WA0008_zpsfe5e40e2.jpg

When it was bought the following had just been done to it:
  • Suspension refresh on Eibach Prolines and Bilstein B4s.
  • AEM v2 fitted for extra lulz
  • Larger exhaust mid-section
  • Wheels refurbished at The Wheel Specialist.
  • All fluids changed and car only ever run on Nandrive.
  • New discs and pads.
  • 4 new tyres and alignment done.
  • Steering rack removed and re-greased. (I helped on that one - a mythical job I'm pleased I don't have to do)
  • Lots of bits and pieces like new bushes and drop links.
  • Momo wheel poached from Premier EP3
  • FD2 Gearknob
The car and paint is generally in great condition for its age and VTEC (...yo) got addictive quite quickly.
But this is a build thread and a car enthusiast forum so it wasn't long before changes were made! :kissingsmiling:
Anyway, got tired of the stock head unit quite quickly so that was replaced with a Pioneer X8500DAB. No pictures taken of it that I can find.
deh-x8500dab_ew_green-orange_left_gallery.jpg

Great unit, loads of customisation and gives me my hands-free and DAB - I originally put a double din screen in but everytime I wanted to do something I had to look away from the road and after a near-miss that would have been entirely my fault I took it back.

Next came a few LEDs which I've linked to the courtesy light. I was really concerned about it looking tacky but it's surprisingly tidy and completes the interior I think.
IMG-20140727-WA0013_zps69b264c7.jpg

Not as easy to do as on the 182 due to restricted access but still perfectly do-able. My phone fucked this picture up, haven't bothered to take another. Sorry about that.

Next I changed the rocker cover gasket as it was leaking a bit of oil. Easy job. Few photos if anyone wanted to see what an EP3s brain looks like.

A friend of a friend was selling an ARC airbox and I decided to make the jump as something of an impulse buy as they're very hard to get ahold of and traded him my old AEMv2 and a bit of cash his way.
An ARC airbox is a no bullshit way of cramming as much air into the engine and a good starting point for extra mods.
They're originally designed for the DC5 but they fit the EP3 just fine.
They come with two filters and this one was a bit grubby on first arrival.

Bit of cleaning and oil later and it looked much better!

Kind of eats the engine bay...
2014-08-24144755_zps4b419e7e.jpg

I was now at something of a crossroads. Do I start chasing big numbers or optimise what I have? With some extra breathing mods and a remap these cars will push ~250 with no internal work. I also need to grow up at some point too...
For those of you who don't know (or care) there are a lot of quite frankly ridiculous limitations to the EP3:
  • The UK 4-1 manifold and cat are a huge restriction - solved by fitting a 4-2-1 and decat. The JDM EP3 comes with a 4-2-1 and LSD and makes 220 as standard. :rage:
  • If you fit a 4-2-1 the exhaust becomes a restriction, so a 3" system becomes a good idea.
  • Standard inlet can replaced by an uprated RBC one.
  • Midsection is a huge restriction though this has been solved with the larger one already fitted.
  • Throttle body is not much of a restriction so not many people bother with the larger 70mm ones.
I decided it was time to grow up and optimise what I have and get an LSD fitted next year, so on Tuesday I went down to Eurospec in Guildford as that's where Romain works and he's generally regarded as the best EP3 tuner in the UK. He also modifies the ECUs for TDi North. Great guy and great place, if you're considering work then I recommend them and he's remapped over 700 EP3s alone. Go figure.
So, onto the rolling road the car went!
DSC_0057_zpse9e79754.jpg

He did a couple of runs just to get some base figures.
As standard:

ECU Out!
IMG-20141111-WA0013_zpseed7d771.jpg

Before and after:
DSC_0061_zpsbbc7584b.jpg

It gained about 40hp in the middle! It's a totally different animal and the VTEC (yo) crossover has been dropped to 5400 from the ~6500 mark.
2nd gear is now something of a commitment and I have wheelspin at the crossover where there previously was none.
He's also raised the rev-limit to a stonking 8650 though the car over-reads and displays a totally ridiculous (ova!!) 9000 before it runs out of puff.

Problem is that now I have a printout I may end up going down the 4-2-1 and RBC intake and chase the bigger numbers... This stuff is addictive...
But at the same time at no point when I drive it do I think "this is slow" so I may just go for an LSD and some Recaros out of a Premier EP3.
Whether to get the standard box modified or just drop an DC5 one in I haven't decided yet - that can wait till 2015. :tongueout:

Otherwise that's where I am with this car now.
Any thoughts and advice is always welcome and if anyone else on here has an EP3 and fancies pointing me in a good direction that's great too.

I reckon you should have just popped an RBC on there before mapping dude! One great regret before selling mine was upping the power to 250bhp and raising the limiter with it.

Good work though!

I allways wanted to like these and had a facelift for 6 months. Did a few bits but never really 'loved' the car, it's too 'good' if that makes sense. Yours looks nice mate, enjoy.

Felt EXACTLY the same about mine. It just wasn't quite.....a Clio?

Wouldn't mind a go in a 250bhp one though

I meant I regretted not upping the power, I think my phone autocorrected!
I just wish I'd have spent more money on it tbh but nevermind!

I'd also say a 2.5" straight through is enough for these unless you boost it, even then 2.5" will probably be okay!
I think area motorsport sell the unsilenced pipe.

The one thing I really miss about mine is the gearbox, so so so good!

Loving the progress mike . Let
Me know when your in my area next il have to see what its like . Im actually selling the civic now time to move onto the bigger toys :)

I've been looking at pipes but one that Romain recommended was from a place called Solid Fabrications though I wouldn't bother with one unless I put a 4-2-1 on there as it's not a restriction.

I understand exactly what you're talking about. I've been struggling to bond with my EP3 the way I did with my 182, but I'm getting there. Everyone I know who has owned an EP3 has said exactly the same thing - they couldn't bond with it.
RenaultSport and European cars in general have a character that the Japanese simply can't reproduce - no matter how good the machine.

I love the box too. :tongueout: Mine doesn't grind but I'm extra gentle with 1st and 2nd gears to keep it that way. I call them the virgin gears. Go figure.

I've heard you're moving onto bigger and better toys! Drop me a message once you pull your JDM rear arb off too!
I'll be down again probably in a few weeks, I'll give you a shout then!

One thing I would say and ive met a couple of chaps from there. The civic forum is very good, albeit a tad quiet in comparison to here.

Really liked the look of it on the welsh meet. Very nice
Cheers dude. Though I must admit I prefer the look of the RenaultSports more.
EP3 look hasn't stood the test of time well and looked like a wedge of cheese next to those lovely Clios and Megs with their flared wheel arches and pretty curves.

Totally agree about 'unloveable EP3' comments... They're better than a Clio in nearly every way, but they're so clinical it's almost boring. Even after I'd spent £500 at ABP having the infamous FRSU, and after I'd thrashed around Oulton Park I still didn't get excited about driving it.

Awesome car though, and much 'nicer' than a Clio as a daily car.

Update
Thought I'd give an update to this.
I begun pricing up a list of things that I need for the Type-R in order to make it a fun car for the summer.
The original plan was to carry on with the previous theme, get a well optimised car that handles great:
Plan:
General Maintenance:

New auxiliary belt (The original has done 66k! Time for a swap!)
Brakes:
Stoptech Discs
Ferodo DS2500 pads
HEL braided lines
Calliper refurb
Handling:
JDM Civic Rear ARB (22mm thick vs the UKs measly 19mm)
Tyres:
Continental Sport Contact 5s or Bridgestone RE050As. (Can't really justify AD08s on my daily...)

But this is a car, so the best-laid plans of mice and men and all that...

I had only ordered the brake lines at this point however driving home one day I felt a rumbling and the car had a nice toasty smell - The drivers off-side calliper had decided to seize way ahead of schedule. I only had one day off left and not enough time to get my planned order in so I was forced to whack some new OEM bits on there and a new calliper in a hurry. The OEM set up is fine but there's a good chance I'll put the nicer toys on in the spring anyway.
Needs a paint though as one side has a nice shiny silver calliper and the other is still black.

ARB and aux belt were a bit less drama.
  • No point in a photo of an aux belt.
  • New rear bushes:
2015-01-26%2015.10.16_zpsjqfpv7nu.jpg

  • New ARB:
2015-01-26%2015.09.15_zpsdwdekone.jpg

  • As expected the 10 year old links on the ARB fell apart:
2015-01-27%2009.20.24_zpsbxvrlqho.jpg

The car has less roll when cornering now so I'm pleased with that. Nice cheap upgrade.

The car has now developed a wobble when doing high speeds so I've begun hunting for the problem. Unfortunately I don't do a lot of motorway travelling so I didn't notice the problem developing.
I've had the wheels re-balanced and swapped the fronts and rears but the problem remains so that rules out tyres too (I think) and I noticed the wobble develop when I turned at higher speeds so I've ordered some bearings and ball-joints and they'll go on Tuesday - hoping that'll make the problem go away!
2015-01-28%2020.46.23_zpslzo1dcde.jpg

Now remember I said I wouldn't start chasing power?
  • Well, a friend of a friend who is sh1t with money was selling a cheap 4-2-1 manifold...
2015-01-26%2015.08.04_zpss2ro2zmm.jpg

  • And I may have gotten frisky online and ordered some other toys...

IMG-20150130-WA0008_zpsqdgyxgfg.jpg

And that's where I'm at. I'm working a lot in February so it's unlikely I'll have the time to make any power-related modifications to the Civic in that time but I'll add an update on Tuesday (3rd Feb) confirming whether it was bearings/ball joints at fault.
I'll add the extra toys and head back to Eurospec in March to get the map tweaked.

I've been a bit busier than I'd planned so I didn't have a chance to update this!
Thanks to @G 172 for being so informative in PMs. I'll be buying from you nearer the spring my friend and my friend will drop you a PM soon to get his bits ordered.

Swapping the bearings and ball joints didn't fix my wobble at high speeds :( so I guess the tyres have worn unevenly and they're now shaped like 50 pence pieces or something. I'll swap them at the end of the salt and grit season.
Bearings were a dickwall of a job but my god it's smooth driving round town now!

The previous owners obviously looked after that car super well...
Just a heads up pic 2 & 3 are copyright lol :tongueout:

Changed my ball joints this week also mate not a nice job lol . Your getting busy with this ep3 mate still need to take me for a spin and see all this fuss with hondata haha !

Yeah, not your car anymore hippie!

I had a problem with uneven tyre wear on my ep3, the juddering was awful!
Yeah, I was talking with the previous owner and it turns out the tyres that are on there have been there for about 2 years so uneven tyre wear may be to blame! Fair play to them mind, there's a fair bit of tread left though I'm now just trying to kill what's left.
I'll get them swapped at the end of Feb once salt and grit season has buggered off and it should be quite a nice car then.
Then the power upgrades start

Of course dude! I'm not sure when I'm next down in all honesty, I'm working an awful lot this month but I've got plenty of days in March to burn
Believe me it totally transforms the car!

So it's been a long time since I've updated this!
So where to start....
What has happened so far?
  • Way back in February I got home after a night shift and smell of brake was very strong and there was smoke coming off the rear near-side calliper - Yet another calliper had decided to seize on me! Anyway I'd foreseen this problem and had spares in the garage so that was a straight forward swap and 2 new discs and pads went on as well.
  • The front bearings and JDM rear ARB went on as planned and it's made the back of the car a little more fun.
  • 4x Bridgestone RE050As
The car has been pretty much trouble free since then and it's been a nice reliable daily.
Anyway after the rather excellent Welsh meet I decided it was time to get all the extra toys I had lying around screwed on.

A good friend of mine is rather excellent mechanic so I invested in his help and yesterday we started screwing parts on.
First he attacked the manifold and cat.
Goodbye Mr Restrictive

Hello Mr Unrestricted!
New%204-2-1%20Off_zpsygkykivp.jpg

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the 4-2-1 manifold on the car however there's an exhaust flange that needs to go on the car as the 4-2-1 comes an inch shorter than the old manifold and the cat did so the next time it's in the air I'll snap a shot.

To utilise the uprated manifolds you need to uprate the engine mounts to minimise any engine rock.

I picked up some inserts for the front & back lower engine mounts - didn't take a photo so here's one I pinched from Tegiwa.
energy-engine-mount-inserts-k20_1.jpg

To get at the lower engine mounts the subframe requires dropping slightly.
I'd noticed an engine rock had developed slightly and the lower-front mounts on these cars like to break. The previous owned replaced the the lower front mount twice. From my garage floor the mount looked fine, however once it was off it was a different story!

2015-05-14%2018.42.50_zpsiyebpqe8.jpg

I'd foreseen this mount having broken so I actually had a spare in the garage. Dropping in the inserts was a total doddle.
The rear mount was a bit of a t**t to get out but with some good thinking from my friend and some wiggling, it came out too!

Next came the new intake manifold.
Here's how the bay looked with the airbox removed and the old intake.
2015-05-14%2014.20.30_zpskbduyzlw.jpg

A popular mod for these cars is to stick on the RBC manifold from the European Accord-R (it also was found on the USDM Civic Si from 06+) and it's become so popular that people have cut them ready to fit into EP3s.
To properly fit an EP3 you are required to cut the slam panel, and as my friend is considerably better with the grinder than I am, he kindly cut the panel for me.
Cutting_zpst1022ayb.jpg

After that it was a case of screwing everything back together, block up any extra holes on the RBC and sticking the throttle body back on with a new adaptor plate and some gaskets I'd bought.
Here is the completed engine bay today.
2015-05-15%2020.13.59_zpspwi8yr5u.jpg

The car has quite a rasp to it now I must admit however I've yet to give it the full beans.
After reading around having an RBC on the car makes it run lean so rather than expose my lump to any unnecessary stress I'm keeping my throttle position as flat as possible and keeping away from Vtec (yo).
The car has been booked in to be mapped on bank holiday Saturday. Research suggests that with the mods thus far I should expect 235-240bhp out of the Civic however right now it drives fine, idles as normal and under normal driving conditions is actually not noise. The only real added noise comes from the mount inserts which I'm hoping will soften up with time.
I do not plan on changing the back box because
a) I like the stock look and it stops me becoming a cop magnet
b) Research suggests it doesn't become a restriction till 300+bhp

To do:
  • Get a new engine cover to give it the OEM look again.
  • Remap on Saturday the 23rd
  • Paint that damn engine cover red again!
  • Cut the hose going to the airbox. Due to the manifold dimension change the hose is now very tight and I can't secure the airbox properly so that needs to change.
  • I may cut further into the slam panel just to give it more wiggle room and so I can fit a rubber surround to stop it rusting and for neat points - however at present the manifold doesn't hit the panel under normal driving.
On another note I really couldn't have done all that work myself as quick as my friend got it done so a massive thanks to him.
I'd have probably given up on removing the old exhaust manifold and set the car on fire!

Romain mapped my accord turbo also.
Lovely EP3 you have. I much prefer the look to that of a clio. Much more modern to my eyes.
Just hate when people put big exhausts on them because they sound absolutely ridiculous. :(
