Oil+Filter change before 36k service - worth it?

  L'arctic Bleu Clio 182FF
Yo people,

Have the 36k service coming up in a couple of months, and know its going to be pricey even if i go to a Ren specialist instead of steelers...

To try and save a couple of quid i was thinking of doing the oil filter and oil change (and pads if needed) before taking it in for the service. I've not changed the oil before, and i'd like to do it just to learn, for peace of mind etc and so i can put the oil in that i want.

Do you think this is worth while doing?.... How much money would i save if i did it myself? Also it's nice to go into the garage and know in the back of my mind (and tell them) that the oil doesn't need to be changed and the pads etc are fine, obviously will save them a lot of time.

I take it that to do the full 36k service, i.e. AUX kit included, they dont need to remove the oil?

Any advice is appreciated! ;)

As a bit of an experiment I'm doing all my own servicing, keeping all receipts and taking photographs of everything I do. I reckon this kind of detail shouldn't cost me much if anything on resale on what is a semi-specialist car (i.e. not a 1.6 Ford Focus).

I'm betting my money on the fact that anyone who might buy my car off me in the future, will be at least as appreciative of all the care I've taken (way above the recommended service) than a whole load of renault stamps.

I did get the cambelt done by GDI so that I have the all important belts 'stamp' and plus it's such a pain!

...that's a long way of saying - if you fancy getting your hands dirty, change the oil yourself.

Changing the oil is easy and will save you a bit of cash. But you won't get a stamp in your service book, which could affect your re-sale value.

Pros and cons it's up to you...

I wont get a stamp from Renault as i will definitely not be taking it back there again, don't think people place too high a premium on a full Renault service history, as long as you have taken it to specialists.
But if i do the oil myself, surely that can't stop a Renault Specialist stamping the book to confirm i've had the full AUX belt change can it?....

yes change it yourself. Buy some good oil and a filter (contact opie oils) and a sump plug key for a renault from any motor factors. Then all you need is a funnel.
It's as simple as:
drain the from the sump plug
Remove and chuck the oil filter (front of engine block)
Refit new oil filter wish some fresh oil smeared on the seal (not tightly at all! read box)
Fill with oil - iirc capacity is around 4 litres. so put in 3 and then keep checking the dipstick as you add more. Bring it upto half way on the dipstick.

if you start your car with low oil, it will cause perminant damage. be warned.

So your going to do a filter and oil change, then pay someone to do it again?

LOL, no, why would i do that?!
I'm going to tell them its done, and the brake pads etc if needs be, just to save a bit of money but primarily so that i know and am in charge of what oil is going in, plus so i can learn how to do the change on the clio...

I was just wondering if this would be ok with the garage, and whether it would cause any problem with the stamp etc, assuming that Renault Specialists can provide the stamp....

All the cars i've done an oil change on involve removing the filter from underneath.... so on the 182 you access it from the bonnet yeah?

Wait till after the service. Mine used to leave me a filter and new washer plug on the front seat for free
