  clio 172
Re map got a 172 looking for a re map am I wasting my time or not my local garage offers re maps for very car van and lorry he is very good. I no lot's of ppl that have been there and are very happy with what they got

  PH1 loads of boost!
On a bog standard car I wouldn't bother. Get some cams, exhaust, decat etc then map it and you'll notice a difference.

Buy an RSTuner, map your car, and then sell it on here. A remap for under £100!

Not only will it work out cheaper going for an RSTuner, but it is also a tried and tested map.

RSTuner every time, doesn't add massive power but no remap does on 1*2's,
but it does fix a lot of problems and improve drivability.

What do you get with the RSTuner kit? Do I just buy the box and that's it? Oh and do I need to buy any cables or software?

Brand new it will have everything you need; box + cables + map file + already unlocked. You just need to supply the laptop :)

Used well it depends on what you buy. But you will then need to buy a license key to unlock it from the previous owner as well as the map file.

Apologies to tucks100 for the hijack but I didn't want to start a new thread!
Is there a way of telling if I have the map already? My cup feels quite responsive & I've never noticed the classic 5k kick too much. Unsure if this is because it's my first RS or if it has the map! From what I've read about it it sounds like it could be. I really want to go for it & get the tuner but don't wanna aware money if it's already there. Cheers guys.

If you have the RST 98ron map on your car you will have :

1100rpm idle on cold start - OEM cold map is 950rpm (This is the easiest way of telling)

950rpm idle once up to temp - OEM is 800/850rpm (I can't remember)

Red line raised to 7800rpm on all gears apart from 1st and maybe 2nd (Can't remember)

You will have power from around 3k rpm, rather than f*ck all until 5k rpm.

There's no sudden kick of power at 5k rpm.

Thanks for the info Dave, only just seen this & not long arrived at work so I'll check when I can later on & the car is cold! I have noticed it has more power from about 3k when I have really given it beans but if the easiest way is the idle thing I'll check that!

What is the car reving to if it revs to 7500 rpm it probably has but if it revs to 7250rpm probably not

I've only ever taken it up to the 7000rpm mark tbh mate, not very often all the way but I change when the shift light pops up!

Is it as simple as just plugging in and downloading the software @Fletcher

I think so mate. I have a MBP but used a old windows laptop to upload/ change maps with the RS-Tuner.

This might help..

Upgrades Saturday 17th July 2010
After changing the exhaust system and cat, the time had come to remap the car to get the best out of the modifications. I could have gone to a specialist for an off-the-shelf Fastchip map, or do it myself using their own RS Tuner interface and software. Fastchip is run by a Renaultsport mapping expert in Holland. The DIY route is slightly more expensive, but the interface and software allow error codes to be read and all sorts of live data displays from the engine sensors. Better value for money I reckon'.

The interface and cables

The process was very straight forward. I even managed to get the Windows software to run on my Macbook using Fusion emulation software. When it comes to 'on-the-driveway-mapping' an Apple laptop is a must! The first stage was to backup the original software onto the laptop. Then Fastchip give you the very latest Renault software for the car. This upload takes about 30 minutes so a fully charged battery is required. Next the engine map part of the software needs to over written with Fastchip's own 98ron performance programme. This is much quicker and only takes 5 minutes.

Error code screen

Live data display

The result is far better drivability with more torque available lower down and a higher rev limit - from 7200 to 7500. Added to this is a much improved cold start with no hesitation and 'kangarooing' - a feature of the engine according to Renault!
The normal 5k kick (a characteristic of the 172 engine), where the engine suddenly overcomes a slight torque and power drop before this point, has now gone. This kick isn't VTEC as some like to call it. The very basic variable timing function on this engine is for emissions and smooth idle and operates at under 2k rpm. To some the car feels less dramatic without this kick - but drivability is so much better and you don't need to wait for 5k for things to happen As a consequence, I don't seem to rev beyond 6500 anymore.

Fuel consumption is the same as before. So the only downside is slightly more expensive fuel. Although, the knock sensors are still functioning so if I need to fill up with normal unleaded, the car will adapt £190

I've just purchased the rs tuner and received the included map which has 97 Ron in the file name- is this the same as the 98 Ron map? Thanks!

Shall we just rename this the RS Tuner thread lol.
I took a pic of my rev counter just after I started it up;

Now it's up to temp its settled down to this

The up to temp idle should be a little higher than that if it's on the 97/98ron map,
mine is almost touching the 1k notch, as it idles at 950rpm.
