Replacing Exhaust Mounts?...

Hey People,

Had my 36k service done yesterday at Ren-O-Tec in Chelmsford (As i'd heard, was a top job by Martin and very pleased)...

He recommended that I replace the exhaust mounts as they have perished. Have searched on here but couldnt see any guides that talk a nye on car DIY idiot like myself through it...

Is it something that the novice could do? Or is it more hassle than its worth?... any tips / advice would be appreciated.

Also, for parts, is genuine Renault the way forward? Or are K-Tec / Halfrauds imitations better?

Easy to do yourself as long as youve got a jack and some axle stands. DONT work under the car with just the jack

Yup, i did mate. Alls you need to do is pump the jack up enough so that it litterly lifts the exhaust a couple of mm higher than normal to take the weight of the mounts. Just lift one exhaust with the jack, change the mount and repeat with the other exhaust.

Might be an idea to wrap your jack in something soft eg an old tshirt so it doesnt damage your exhaust.

Balancing exhaust on jack scares me, that definitely ok? How much do you think a garage would charge to do it, just out of interest?...

I did it mate, it's literally just resting on the jack with some rag/tissue on top to keep it in place. The actual rubber bit is a pain to get the sockets in, but when you do it's not moving for anything! Mine sits perfect now :)

Good stuff, gonna be all over that job soon. Is it essential to put the sockets in or something similar? Does it make that much difference? I never knew the exhaust mounts existed and they have been on there for nearly 5 years so i guess it is not unreasonable for them to perish!...

Yeah. When you put the sockets in, the rubber can't flop down like it could with nothing there.

Fair play, shouldn't be too difficult to sort something out for it, plus a couple of cable ties!
How much do you reckon a ren specialist would charge to fit them? I like to try and put a figure on the money i'll save myself!...

Damage the exhaust??????????
Other than a scratch or two I cannot imagine what sort of damage you could cause.

The full unit is held in my 3 screws, so if you got a new unit then you can fit it yourself easily. Sorry if that's not what you mean!

haven't looked at a 182, but can't see it being any more complicated than the 172 (?) - it's a 172 in that guide anyway

they're dead easy to fit - don't need to lift the car or use a jack under the exhaust (use a lump of wood or similar to support the back box if you want to, but, providing you do them one at a time, can't see the need really

they're held up by three 13mm bolts and there's a small bolt (possibly with an allen key head) that's screwed through the mount into the exhaust hanger. i used thick rubber hose, zip tied in, to support the mount - there'll be piccies on search of what various people have done.

it's really v straight-forward and you'll save yourself the token amount a garage might charge if you do it yourself

The site at the top of the thread doesnt seem to list and show the products online, unless i'm being a complete numpty.
Do you know of any other sites where you can browse etc, and what are they called, exhaust mounts, brackets etc?
I'll probably just call up Renault and get the part, but if there is going to be a silly price difference then i'll look about...

there's a link in post#5 to a company that sells pattern ones for about £8ea, although they will probably be available over the counter locally for not much more (eg. Bosal part number 255151; you'll have a Bosal dealer somewhere near you). really do need to support them with tube/etc, otherwise they'll not last all that long (regardless of them being OE or pattern)

Just called up Renault, original part is £9.40 + VAT, so all over that, the ones on there have lasted over 4 years! Have some old thick hose too which may do the job in the corners. Cheers for your advice people
