I've removed the rear number plate ready for attaching a new one and have found that there are four holes drilled in the boot lid, and that they are starting to rust; small bubbles creating roughly a 1 inch (max) diameter circle around the hole.
I'm wondering what is the best step to take before fitting the new number plate? Could I cover it with something and leave it or should I rub it down to remove the bubble and then spray over to cover the metal? My worry with the second option is that it will look a bit odd if anyone in the future removes the number plate and finds a different coloured patch underneath. The car is liquid yellow so it will never match unless I get the panel done, which isn't really an option. I won't be using the holes as I plan to fix the plate on with heavy duty foam tape or dual lock velcro.
Thanks for any help that can be provided!
