Shooting Fireworks / People watching fireworks

  BMW Z4
Tonight Edinburgh conclude their festival with a firework display from the castle.

Obviously a shutter release and a tripod is essential but what are your hints and tips of settings to choose from for shooting fireworks. Also i will be taking some photos of people watching the fireworks and enjoying the event. What would you suggest taking photos of people outside at night? Is a flash recommended?

Any help possible i will be grateful of.

Thanks.

its possible to shoot without a tripod and shutter release , i did high iso and shutter priority and played with shutter speeds

i couldn't use a tripod for this , infact i was standing on a moving boat on the water at the end of Cowes week
