Afternoon.

The old man and I were pricing up cartridges for Duck hunting over the wash. He's currently using bismuth (with 3-shot) but at £24 a box, they're a little steep. Reloading costs aren't much nicer either,

Thing is, there's some confusion about the use of steel shot. BASC is showing that 2 different bodies are advising different proofing strengths for the gun, and 2 different choke recommendations. One saying 1/4 choke, the other half.

This is possibly the biggest longshot (pun happened, deal with it) thread I've posted, but is anyone out there using a classic light-game gun (pref 12-gauge) and any experience with steel shot? Last thing the old man wants is pitted and bulged barrels.

His 'daily' is a 30yr-old Miroku 12. In case that helps at all.

Ok mate first steel should never be choked more than 1/2, that's half choke. This is due to steel having very little "give" between the ball bearings.

What steel is he intending to use. I ask as if he intends to use 2 3/4 inch carts I have a feeling his miroku will be ok. It's when u move to 3 and 3.5 inch carts you get issues.

The only way to tell is to check proof marks on the barrel of his gun. The international standard of steel proofing is the flur de lays symbol and this basically means the guns chamber can take 3.5 tonne of pressure per square inch. That will deem it as ok. Now miroku are copies of browning guns that are US guns and the yanks tend to like to go big so hopefully the japs have copied the proofing to sell in the US too

1/2 is fine for steel, it patterns really tightly anyway so you don't lose anything. I shoot steel through 1/4 and 1/2 int he DT10 and it's been absolutely fine.

If you're doing a fair bit of fowling I would look at picking up a cheap/modern 12g like a hatsan escort pump for the price a few boxes of Bismuth you have something you don't mind cleaning up the day after if you get soaked and you can throw steel through for years on end without a care in the world.

It seems he's been to see some people over the weekend and got his answers for his particular, 40yr-old Miroku.

Personally, I don't live shoot, I don't rate my aim enough yet. Even if I did, no chance am I going to sit out in the uk equivalent of a paddy field, taking pot shots and flocks of geese in the freezing cold and dark.
Hell no.
And, for my purposes, the 16g will keep firing lead until that's banned from skeet ranges

I know the semis do, I've never thought to look at the chokes on a pump!

@Scrooge, @Cub. we'll have to get together in the new year at a decent range, must be plenty in the essex/oxon/cambs triangle that will just do pay-on-the-day. Failing that, get to Riseley up my way, lovely place.

There's an awesome I'm Brentwood. Buy 50 cartridges, walk around to 10-15 different positions, two shots on each. Go home with sore shoulder.

They do a bit of Skeet too but the blokes doing that look like monumental dickheads.
