Slight grinding noise when turning wheel

Hi there,
When I turn my steering wheel, I get a slight grinding noise that has only recently started occurring. Could this be that the power steering fluid level is low?

would it not be worth checking the level and refilling before asking?

how do you check this? and where do you fill it up? mines making a noise but i dont know if its the fluid... popped the hood and my drivers side shock is slightly titled when a full lock is turned.. any ideas?
