What does this spring do ? Is it important ?

Soo taking my gearbox out last night and noticed this spring on the bottom of the gearbox, looks like its been wearing away on something and snapped,
whats it for, do i need a new one ?

I would guess that this is the spring that opposes the up / down movement in this shaft......i think that translates to the reverse gear engagement.

Does it feel a bit loose going into reverse?

its the spring which keeps neutral central. the gear stick will fall around when in neutral without it.
