Which cam?

I'm looking at getting into a bit of photography, my grandad enters many competitons with good results and I've always been interested in it.
I have done the odd bit with varied success, so what I wanna know is.. which is a good SLR camera/lense combo to get me started? Price wise, I dont want to spend too much because this may just be a fad! lol

Thanks in advance :)

Well... most people are going to suggest a Nikon D40/D60 or Canon 350D/400D/450D as they are all at the lower end of the price scale.

But I am different and I recommend the Olympus E-420... small, light, packed with features and very good value for money.

I have the twin lens bundle that cost £399 and comes with a 14-42 and 40-150 lens combo (being micro 2/3 means that its the equivalent of 28-84 and 80-300mm)

Hi mate, thnx for the info.
I like the look of that olympus, can you link to a good place online?
Would you say thats a good all rounder too, with the two lenses etc?

Good all rounder indeed, has dust reduction, live view etc. Not the largest set of lenses out there but I am just a casual photographer and it suits me down to the ground.

With the 14-42 only:

or with the 'pancake' lens:

I am getting the pancake lens next month - makes the camera super portable as its a tiny lens!!

I'm seriously thinking about the Olympus.

I think it depends how much "into it" you'll get as the Olympus will seriously limit your choice of lens.

For me, the physical size is a major factor which is why I'm favouring the Olympus. Also the twin lens kit will cover most situations for me without additional expense (would probably pick up a pancake lens too)

Go for it Revels - Everyone can describe what camera they have, its positive and negative points and recomendations. Sticky the fucker - job done!

Well we get loads of "What SLR shall I buy threads?"

People suggest the same cameras everytime. I might try and knock something together later on.

Hmmm I'll be looking to buy a DSLR soon too, I'll go start a thread now!!! ;)

I reckon I'll await the release of the new Sony Alpha range and for the prices to tumble from rrp before I do buy.
