Which RS Clios make the best buys?

  Various
I'm currently writing a RS Clios feature for Piston Heads and would love to know your opinion on all incarnations please, in terms of whether or not you feel they make good buys at the moment, whether they appear to be rising or falling in value and whether or not they are destined to become future classics!
I'm interested in.....

Clio I - 16v, Clio Williams, Williams 2 and Williams 3
Clio II - Renault Sport 172, Clio Renault Sport 182 and Clio V6 Renault Sport
Clio III - Renault Sport 197, Clio Renault Sport 200
Clio IV - Renault Sport 200 EDC

Many thanks,

Guy R Baker

  Listerine & Poledo
I - Williams 1
II -Phase 1 172 (in silvcer, with the aluminium bonnet), Phase 2 v6 & 182 Trophy
III - R27 (in Liquid Yellow, with ALL the body trimmings)

  Disco 5 ,Monaro VXR
Personally I think V6 clios have reached a peak in value.
Ones to appreciate in value will be
Clio Williams
172 Cup ( but completely standard non track prepared with good history)
182 Trophy
197 F1 Team
Basically the well received special editions that are more than 5 years old where numbers are limited and people will pay good money for a well looked after example
But that's just my 2p's worth

  Listerine & Poledo
Pretty much that ^
Worth a mention that "well looked after" will generally translate to "original", whereas many of the examples of the 172/182 will have been "improved" by owners who know better than RenaultSport.

Could produce an interesting thread this.

Basically, (IMO):

All Mk1's are now money pits, with the exception of buying a mint or near mint Williams, they're all rotten or falling apart. Build quality was never high enough to be a viable runner for this long. A mint Williams will cost the earth and could appreciate, but has a very limited market. A near mint Williams for the right money, that you do up, could be a nice earner.

MK2's, pretty much throw away a mk2 172, and 182. The ph1, the exclusive (if entirely original) and the trophy are all going to do quite well. If the exclusive was a nicer car it'd negate the market for a normal ph1, but it's not too desirable with the horrible interior so it keeps the normal ph1 quite popular.

Ph1's were at bottom value approx 18-12 months ago, and if you bought one then you'd do well out of it even now.

Mk3's, too new to matter at the moment, and IMO they haven't really left a mark in the same way as the others, with various other marques at the time being of a very similar standard.

MK4's - Sorry, game over, two words - Fiesta ST.

  Peugeot 308
For me, its all about the Ph1 172... a decent PH1 172' will only appreciate in Value IMO.
A lot of people have the itch for them these days...sellers knows it.
I oddly have grown to like the Exclusive, when many don't. Prices have risen on that model as of late.

Ph2 172 and 172Cups are pennies these days when around the 100k mileage mark. Although I guarantee that you'd have to sacrifice several hundred £££ to make it shine once more.

182's - Unless its coloured in either RB or LY, a lot of examples can be picked up for around £2k in average condition.

i think v6 will always be a specialist car and in another 10 years + will climb again, possibly the twr ph1 more so than the ph2. They dont have the heritage of the turbo 1 and turbo 2 they emulate but still a limited run special mad dog from Renault. i also think a sliver ph1 with the ali bonnet might climb but the ones that will be hold value are the 172 cup and the trophy, but original examples so that chucks mine out the window lol. It depends on what the french hanker for in the future, in all of the older renaults they snap them up and pay good money for them, the Renault Sport specials hopefully will do the same, though i think they had all of them bar the trophy?

Define 'best'?

Each model has strengths and weaknesses compared to the others, and as said above ALL of the older generations are likely to be very thin on the ground and doubtful will still exist as Renault intended.

Me and my brother together have owned most of that list :)
Best of the bunch for me was my 197 which will be considered a controversial opinion, but I think that was due to the KW coilovers I fitted which were awesome.

Maybe, big maybe Ph1 172s in a desirable colour
182 trophy hands down (if mostly original)

All the vees seem to be going up in value again. I fear i've missed my chance to own one. Especially the ph2

I don't think the mk3s will go back up in value, even the r27 isn't really anything special. The LY ones seem to be holding the best value though (£6/7k vs £5k for other colours). And the 200s are dropping astonishingly quick.
Renault cocked up with the mk3 imo, not making a special one.

And exactly as has been said regarding the mk4. It'll die a death.

Can't beat 182's for value for money! Have to spend 3 times as much to get a worthy upgrade... R27 is my favourite looker though.

  A4 DTM/iceberg cup
Personally I still love a near standard 172 cup, hence having bought a second one. I love the poverty spec interior as it reminds me of older hot hatches form the 80s, but in a car I can use everyday if needs be.
Not everyone will agree, but to me it seems like the last off the old school, big engine, small car, no bells and whistles.

The trophy and mk2 v6 will be the Crown Jewels though, undoubtedly.

  Ph1
The best thing you can do with a Ph1 Exclusive is break it for parts. Terrible colour, terrible interior, terrible wheels. Lemon of a idea.

Ph1 (normal) will be saught after being a ''first edition'' and plummeting rapidly in numbers now. Sure the Cup will, being a light weight raw number and Trophy too.

  172
Clio 172 phase 2 has to be the ultimate budget choice.

Find me a car with similar performance and spec brand new and I'd have to pay well over 15k. I've just spent just under 2 grand all in (including purchasing and fitting a ss exhaust) on a car that needs no work for many many miles to come.

My Trophy has probably depreciated £2.5k in nearly 5 years. There's not much left on the bone to go any further!

Amen. 125k happy miles in mine from new and what did I do? Ruined it. Grrr. Wish I'd never done a single thing to it. As it came direct from Renault it was perfect for what it was.

  Pug 206 SW, 172 CUP
Keeping my cup boggo. I liked the 182ff I drove before but the there is something about the Cup that really appeals to me. A full on antidote to German vileness and every car maker that uses that as a benchmark could be the reason. Although my cup has been very reliable much like the 182 before it.

That will be the Cups selling point in the future I'm sure (it's anti-golf nature) and the fact that when it's on the boil it is more than quick enough but can also potter about quite happily returning decent mpg unlike a modded old skool hot hatch.

I can't fault the cup on track rain or shine and bar sorting a non cup front spring and non cup rear dampers I haven't refreshed the 75k running gear yet.

Yes it has limits on a stinking hot day as it is but there is still plenty of car within those limits.

Lack of ABS on wet days is not as much of issue as you think it could be especially if your first cars didn't have it.

Mine is really growing on me. I always made N/A noises when I played with cars as a kid not wooshy turbo noises :)

And unlike the trophy which may be cherished more the Cups are more likely to see the odd track day even when they get rarer.

  172 Cup
I say 172 cup in terms of bang for your buck for a track day car, what other car can you buy for approx £1500 (and then refresh suspension) that will keep up with most things if well driven. Nothing comes close IMO and still costs peanuts to run

  LY 200 EDC LUX
I'm on my 4th renault now. Had a 172, 16v, mk3 200 and now a mk4 200 EDC.

Actually hated my 16v to be honest. Had it for a couple of months before I sold it on.

Mk2 172 was ok but I found it horrid on long journeys, mainly due to the driving position.

Mk3 200 was a great car on a nice day, in the right conditions, in the right mindset. Any other time the ride and severe lack of torque low down just got on my nerves, as did the premature failure of the 3rd / 4th synchro.

My current mk4 EDC is by far the best of them all! I just love driving it! It looks great, loads of low-down torque, its practical, it sounds mega on full chat and is a nice place to be inside. I'm also yet to see another on the road! Do not discard it until you've driven one, you'll be surprised :)

It depends what you want from a car really.

  Pug 206 SW, 172 CUP
The mk4 is the complete opposite of the cup. Sadly all manufacturers seem to be gradually producing their own version of a Golf gti. It's the last thing the market needs really. We need more manufacturers to do bare bones versions for people that want that stuff. I was sad when it all went turbocharged. It had to but it was a shame. The mk4 is a good car it just doesn't offer anything different.

  172
172 cup just because its as close to the 80's hatches as it'll get from now on. i wouldnt buy a clio because was good on long runs and mpg return its about having a hoot. the 172 cup is probably the last of the harsh track orientated hatches that we will get. shame really

  Whichever has fuel
As soon as I sort my life out, I'll be buying a 197 for a daily car. I've had every fast Renault (apart from the new 5 door automatic...) and I feel the 197 offers the best all round package.

  RB182cup&golf gti
I've probably got the most desirable least desirable model! Immaculate 10 year old 21k miler garaged from new RB 182.......cup [emoji3]
I'd love a black 200 and would have one tomorrow for a daily if the gearbox wasn't an issue

I want a nimbus or red cup packed 197 with climate control.

I'm a simple man!
