Does anyone know of any decent garages in the Northants area that I can trust with my 172? After changing ball joints and inner and outer rods the steering still feels vague so think it needs to go into a specialist now before I get fed up with it!!

I've just replaced both my rear shocks at 52k miles, they looked ok and didn't leak but I changed them anyway. The car feels a lot better now, just goes to show that even if they appear to work ok they can still be a way past their best..

..have you done as Henk described, updated to the latest version?

..thanks mate I was worried about it being gearbox end because of the risk of it losing its gearbox oil, i'll order one of the adjustable ones.

..I'm part way through replacing a drive shaft on my 172 FF. The clip that holds the boot on at the gearbox end has come off the replacement drive shaft. The clip looks like this:-...

I did this test on mine and got 13L, I just figured it was how much fuel is left in the tank?!

..also, they normally give you the option of buying the car back for 10% of its book value :-)

My Fiat Coupe was written off last year because of minor scrapes to the bumper and bonnet, doesn't take a lot for them to write off older cars nowadays. Did you get the other drivers insurance details?

Sorry if this is a daft question but I've seen lots of people referring to their "daily derv" ..what on earth is a derv when it's at home?

I think most things car related are just patience, confidence and the right tools (pink tools in Stephies case!) ..and if my experience is anything to go by garages don't always do a very good job!

I suppose re-applying false nails after changing them adds a one to the difficulty! ;-)

not quite.. The inner track rods tightened up the steering but it's still got some play somewhere. Think I'm going to try wishbones next as they look original. Not really sure how long the original wish bones last? anyone?

on a scale of 1 to 10 with ten being the hardest. I'd describe it as a two.. you just need a decent set of sockets and spanners You might also need a set of spring compressors, you don't have to use them on the 172/182's but im not sure about the 1.4

Thanks Russ.. I'm going to be doing front shocks, wishbones, disks & pads all round so cant stretch to £60+ a side for the full top mount kits at the mo.. I don't think the top mounts are that bad, It doesn't knock or cluck when its being driven.. it's only 52k miles at the moment But, makes...
