Clio 172/182 3D model?! I'm BAFFLED.

  Titanium Clio 182FF
Hi all, it really confuses me that I cannot find a single game in recent times that has a Clio 172/182 in it, yet they litter every race track in the UK, and continental Europe too! I'm trying to make my own desktop background (private use) of a 182, but can only find a terrible, low-quality model of the car. Gran Turismo 5/6 has a 172, but it's a standard model ported from GT4 on the PS2, and not up to snuff.

I've had no problem finding models for the 197/200, Meganes, Golfs of any generation, Beemers, etc. But a 1*2? No luck. I mean, why does Forza Horizon, a game developed in England of all places by Playground Games have no 1*2s?! Meanwhile, there's a Williams and an RS200, it just seems like such a glaring omission!

Been wondering this myself!
I guess its because its been overshadowed by the V6's from the same generation.
Also makes me wonder if this is also the reason no diecast models exist

Would love to drive a clio 1*2 around the ring. Something logistically unfeasible being from Aus. Wont be sending my 182 over haha

You need to check out Assetto Corsa 👍

Now that I remember. Pretty sure Dirt Rally 2.0 has the clio s1600.
Not exactly a road going model though 😅

I really should re-install AC. Need to invest into a half decent wheel setup haha.

Yep always bugged me they never got added into Forza Horizon or Motorsport. Meanwhile they get Peugeot 308, Citroen DS3 etc. Clio V6 seems to take its place so they never bother with the 182.

I'm in the same boat, being from South Africa, I'd also love to race it in a sim, but besides that, I just want the model to take screenshots with.

I didn't want to oust the maker of this Assetto Corsa mod, but I've already had this model for a while, and I'm not really satisfied with it:
1. This isn't a 172/182, the front bumper and grille are from a regular Phase 2 but colour coded
2. The model isn't very high quality (not the mod maker's fault most likely), just that the proportions are wrong on the car.
3. It's also low-poly, looks like it may come from TOCA 3 on the PS2.
4. I want a road car, I may sound picky but for most cars out there, finding a model of one is no problem.

Let me illustrate:

If you can't see the difference, here's a video flipping back and forth between them quickly:

The door looks like its from a 5-door, it's way to short, and the rear quarter is also about the same size as the 5-door's rear quarter, that's to say it's way too large.
For comparison, here's another Assetto Corsa mod for the 2002 Mk4 GTI 5-door, which I'm sure you can agree looks pretty much spot on, it's a high poly mesh and best of all, it has the OEM interior:

True, but I really wish we didn't have to settle, Golf owners don't have to settle for only having the VR6 3D model.
As for the wheel setup, I had a decent one, but I sold it along with my sim rig to buy my 182 😂 one piece of advice I have there, is make sure you have space to leave it sitting for weeks or months without getting in the way, because if you're anything like me, you'll use it a lot in the first couple of weeks, then very little in the months that follow, and the amount of room it takes up with a sim rig got so annoying that I packed the sim rig away and just used it with the desk clamp from then on until I sold it.

Picking this thread up I’ve commissioned someone to make up a 182 for assetto corsa. Happy to share it with you all once it’s done. Would also welcome feedback throughout the process to get it spot on.
Sweet! Looking forward to seeing the progress/next update!
Awesome! I literally started trying to make one out of the V6 from Gran Turismo 6 and this lower poly model, but I'm certainly not skilled enough to have easily pulled it off anytime soon, so I'm glad a real professional is going to have a crack at it and I'm excited to see how it'll turn out! I've also got a lot of hands on experience with the Clio 2 shell (thanks to a teardown of the doors, bonnet, wings, and full respray), so my input may come in handy.

The guy is starting with a V6 shell from what he’s shared so likely there will be a lot of back and forth to get the shape and dimensions right. I know nothing so just leaving him to it until the model is done then will provide feedback and get it as close as possible.

The goal would be to have it unencrypted and available for anyone here to have a play with. If someone wanted to turn it into a 172 I’m sure that would be easy enough with the rear bumper.

Yeah its the V6 interior flipped, stereo power button and speedo with milage screen on wrong side etc! - not an easy thing to recreate for the sake of a minor detail 😂

The Clio 172/182 really is a weird blind spot in modern games.
They really are!
Surprises me neither have ever been featured on a forza horizon game.
Especially since the developer is UK based (where the 1*2 are most popular).
Could they redeem for the upcoming title? I have my doubts. Especially since it's Japan based.

It would make sense to supply the 182 Trophy. Then allow the rear bumper to be changed to the non exhaust cut out variant, so people can build themselves a 172.
Kill two birds with one stone.
*ph1 will miss out with this strategy though.

Front end finished up. Working on the rear then importing it into AC and sorting the physics out.
Scratch that, it's nearly perfect! If you don't mind, the only issues I spotted are:
1. The front bumper and headlight lines don't cross perfectly like on the real car
2. The front indentation between the number plate and Renault badge isn't quite wide enough, it needs to go nearly to the middle of the headlights
3. The headlight washer blanks are in line with the high beams, but they should be in line with the dipped beam (the xenons)
4? I can't tell because the image isn't very high-resolution, but the bonnet doesn't look like it has the crease in the middle, it looks smooth like a Phase 1 bonnet, and I can't quite make out whether there's windscreen washers on the bonnet but that would be a nice touch (I don't want to criticise too much, this isn't a Gran Turismo model after all)

Overall, I don't want to sound ungrateful, it's really a great model so far and the best 1*2 model I've ever seen even as is, so this is a huge win!

Really appreciate you taking the time to go through all of this. I will share all this with the modeler. Hopefully he’s happy to do all these small things (I am paying him after all!) if not I do plan on making the model open source to anyone on here so we end up with the best possible thing!

That would be brilliant, I think I speak for the whole community when I say that it's very much appreciated!
And it's no trouble on my part, I've been waiting for years and like I said I think I know the Clio shell inside out, quite literally:

(my old Phase 1 I spent 6 months respraying)
And having both owned this Phase 1 and a 182 gives me an appreciation for what stayed the same and what changed.

I'm also working on a 3D project related to the Clio (audio related), and to my knowledge it hasn't been done before on a Clio, once I've completed the prep work I'll create a detailed thread and provide the .stls... here's a hint:

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing the rear as well, the V6 model is completely different back there!
