I'd be going component cable for the Xbox and calling Virgin and seeing if they will do you a deal for a newer V HD (not the V+) box and use HDMI for it. In fact, I think it's £49 for the box and you get all the non-premium HD stuff for no extra charge. They will even give you an HDMI cable...

Even if the iPad does eventually enable calls it's not going to be a phone replacement. I rarely take a bag out (like the majority of men I'd imagine) so where would it go? As has been said just get both and complete your collection, or 'orchard' if you will ;) with an iMac/MB(P).
