Had the call today that my parts are ready to collect from powder coating, so I'll go for them tomorrow.
In the meantime time I've been doing more bits of plating - ARB brackets, steering rack brackets etc.
Decided to give the rack a freshen up too, plated the pipes, stripped the paint off...
I'd be replacing all the bearings and seals while I was in there, same for oil pump, chain etc..
I've got a dial bore gauge and a set of micrometers if you want to measure your crank and bores
I'll jump in on this, anyone using a tag to track their kids? My 10yr old has just started walking home from school alone, we've got life360 on her phone, but I'd like something else like a tag we can stick in her school bag or coat incase her phone dies etc..
Dropped all of the parts I need powder coating off this morning, they reckon they should be able to turn them around in a week which is ideal.
Picked up some bits I'd had vapour blasted for plating on the way home, I'd had the guy blast the exhaust manifold too, as it looked a bit scruffy.
I...
That looks absolutely s**t, you'd be better off with a car battery and some jump leads (please don't do this either)
You want a Mig welder for welding a nut onto a rounded bolt.. where is it on the car? What else have you tried so far?
The shell is really solid, when I removed the rear 1/4 panel trims to look down into the back of the sills there's a little bit of corrosion so I'll do the rear sills before it's painted. Jacking points/axle mounts etc are all good, thankfully
https://www.youtube.com/@Joshwaa___ this lad seems to do fairly decent welding/rust repairs..
10k to do all of the welding and a full paint isn't unreasonable, assuming it's done to a high standard. If you're looking to spend a lot less then finding someone a bit more pragmatic who will make...
Thanks 👍, I'm surprised you've had a bad experience with powder coating, I've used the same place for mine for almost 20yrs and I've never had a part fail. I do agree you lose the fine detail in some parts with thick powder but going into winter it's too cold for me to spray 2k in the garage now.
Bit more progress today, got the engine bay loom out, exhaust manifold and cat out, engine bay cleaned and the subframe, rack, hubs etc off
My back is in bits now, if I can move tomorrow I'll strip the subframe down in the garage, then sort out powder coating. Still feels like I've got a...
Bit of a quiet weekend, spent most of Saturday giving the garage a deep clean and a proper tidy and doing the brakes on the Mrs car, got time to do a couple of batches of plating, ran out of demin water so I built up my front calipers with new pistons and seals.
Forecast decent weather this...
I've got really nice condition 182 manifold in the garage, I got a 172 milltek downpipe cheap which I had a magnaflow sports cat welded in. I think most of the gains of the 182 set up come from ditching the standard 172 cat anyway.
You need to be quite picky when it comes to finding someone to do the welding.. Most crash repair/volume work body shops won't be used to rust repair/restoration work, and you definitely don't want it done by someone that does 'MOT welding'
The last thing you want is to pay good money to end...
There's a lot more work than a wire brush and some snake oil rust products required there unfortunately. If you're not up to speed with welding/body repairs I'd start getting quotes from some body shops that specialise in restoration work. There's nothing stopping you stripping the...
Back home again and slow progress is better than no progress.. picked up the repaired bracket this morning.
I've got a couple of weeks leave coming up so hopefully I'll be able to get the front subframe, bottom arms, hubs etc off and away for powder coating before the bad weather sets in
New dephaser pulley fitted today, timing belt re-fitted and the odd clicking noise is gone, thankfully!
Also got the cam pulley cover, lower inlet manifold, alt/pas brackets and new engine sensors fitted.
Annoyingly I've found that the alternator pivot bolt bracket it cracked
So that's...
Had an unexpected weekend at home so carried on building the engine up,
Got the head on, new lifters, rockers, cams in, cam cover on, timed up with OEM timing tools. Unfortunately when turning over the engine by hand it's free to turn but the (new OEM) dephaser was making a weird...
Picked my brake calipers up from the parcelforce depot on Saturday too.. I'd had them cerakoted last year but when I took them out of the box a few weeks back they'd started to rust through, mustn't have been blasted enough prior to coating. Thankfully the guy was apologetic and re did them at...
New bench grinder and zinc plating kit was delivered this week so I've started stripping all of the old fasteners and had a go at plating, never done it before but it's pretty easy, if time consuming.
Buzzing with the results, everything that comes off the car is getting re-plated, I'm away...
Started building the engine up this afternoon,
Got the block jet washed, scrubbed, brushed out the oil ways etc and blew it all dry with an air line
Cleaned the crank, brushed through and sprayed out the oil ways with loctite degreaser, cleaned the journals with IPA and measured them...
Round two of engine painting today, it's a pain getting the garage set up for spraying 2k but the results are worth it, I'm mega happy with it, exactly what I wanted first time round.
I've just cleaned my guns and shut the garage door, next time I'm home I'll unmask it, scrub the inside of the...
After rage quitting yesterday I've ordered half a litre of RAL 7001 in 2k, and some 2k epoxy primer, hopefully this is much closer to what I had in mind in the first place
Got the block properly cleaned inside and out today, masked up and prepped for painting. All was fine until the paint started to dry and it was Matt.. I'd assumed the high temp engine enamel I'd bought would be gloss but it's not. It dried looking like primer.
I absolutely hate it so I've just...
