For me, that ending makes the most sense really and in all fairness, there's no such thing as a "good" ending in Cyberpunk. It isn't what the genre is about, it's all bleak.

Up until you reach the point you can go and meet Hanako at Embers (NOCTURNE OP55N1). Once you reach that point, I'd say it's about the perfect time to go to Phantom Liberty.

There is a form of honour system in the game but it's far from perfect.
Sometimes if you get involved with a shoot out between plod and lets say Tyger Claws, some times plod get pissed with you. However, occasionally, you'll come across two cars shooting at each other, if you attack one car...
Have you been Sleeping every hour in game? If you sleep in game for any amount of time, it gives you extra XP for an hour IRL. Showering does the same for health too.
@Ay Ay Ron as @Willo40 has said, you need to upgrade before taking on Beat the Brat gigs. Past the first one, which is the guy that's a clone they ramp up in difficulty. High Body will help heaps.
As for Missions and earning more, its very dependent on how you wanna play the game...
