To be fair, it's not far off the 172 cup spec. No air con, no leather, no keyless entry etc. Losing ABS is hardly gonna knock much weight off. I see it more as the starting spec 197. If you let other models in the range have the cup suspension, it's gonna take some shine off the cup model.
Wasn't having a dig at your choice Lee, was just talking about the article in general. I had a new 182cup when they came out, which wasn't exactly a popular choice!
1.6% weight saving according to the article! Why the hell anyone would put up with a naff interior, no air con etc for that type of weight saving is beyond me. Unpainted side strips:dead: .
To save weight? Surely there's bugger all difference in weight between air con and climate? Think it was more likely to keep costs down, to off set the cost of the suspension.
In a straight line, a new s3 would tear a 197 a new one! Isn't it ~15s to 100? On a twisty back road it will be closer, but no chance in a straight line.
Brake wear figures are normally bs, took mine for a service the day after Fred had fitted new pads and discs, to be told they were 50-60% worn and would need replacing at the next service!
What killed it for me is when they tested the 197 against the Cooper S, Corsa VXR, and the Ibiza Cupra, and they all pulled away from it. I don't care if a hot hatch isn't the quickest, but thats ridiculous.
Why spend 15k on a car that still has the bulk of it's depreciation to do? Buy a V6 at that price, fuel bills will be higher but the lower depreciation will more than offset that. Or a 350z, Golf GTI etc etc.
Driven a 197 a few times. Feels a lot more of a grown up car, I (my opinion) feel it's got too much grip, so you only notice how good the chassis is when your absolutely caining it. It needs a more powerful engine, it's a bit like a Boxster (in that it's under-engined/over chassised), ie the...
