Agreed, they are vunerable to the usual stresses but less so due a greater R&D budget than that of Vauxhall for the Nova's engine. Also the design is newer than that of the Vauxhall. The tolerances are greater. Japanese along with German efficiency is usually second to none.
Not as good as the Toyota engine, and not as strong. Japanese engineering proves itself alongside German through high mileage reliabilty, as does the rest of the car.
Indeed. My Clio see's anything between 350 and 700 miles per week I'm only putting £10.00 every other day. Not that different from my 406 HDi. Only difference is that the HDi engine will run onto 250K. I won't be keeping the Clio when she reaches 85K. Only on 16.5K so far, so many miles left yet!:)
Unfortunately most Nova's are now entering salvage yard territory due to rust and rot. Also their engines aren't as refined due to being of an older design.
The Starlet's aren't particulary new but newer than a nova.
As for kit cars the only ones worth buying are Caterhams. Second to that is...
I owned a 406 HDi estate as my daily driver/workhorse before buying the 182 Cup last week.
When driving her easily I'm on 42-45 mpg. The economy of this car for the performance it offers is fantastic.
I wouldn't say it drops to any less than 23 mpg when driving hard and changing gear alot...
Believe me, their overtaking ability is phenominal!!!!
With suspension geometry altered and much better dampers and springs (O.K. getting on for a total cost of 9K) and the car now handles properly with much less torque steer. Remove the rear seats, interior panelling etc and the car only...
A few years ago I dueled my Integra Type R against a Starlet Turbo. I was totally annihilated and had a hell of a lead on him to begin with on our local duel carriage way. I was shot down at over a 100.
When chatting to the chap he explained he was running circa 200 bhp on standard internals...
Seems to be working. I've a bit of problem with the pikey pretense as I don't fancy towing a caravan behind unless of couse it was ultra light, maybe carbon fibre.
Once again everyone, thank you for all you comments, really has helped!:D :D :D
I've owned the 182 a week now.
Just covered 600 miles in her. I'm noticing that perhaps she could loosening up. Not entirely sure, but I'm driving the car spirtedly and with enthusiastic intent.
I'd agree with everybody that until 5250 rpm is reached there is a bit of a lull in performance...
Yes that could be it. We had a rolling start 20 mph. As you say the ST does develop it's power lower down. The 182 is definatley slugish before 5K rpm. Oddly my Integra wasn't as slugish before it's V-Tech point. Probably down to a short 1st and 2nd gear.
Looked at the drivers mat to see if it was restricting the throttle travel. Hoping it was something as simple as that but it's fine.
I'm driving the car in the usual manner as I would with the Integra. Changing down more so and using the power of latter part of the rev range (5K rpm plus). Yes...
Took the car to my local Renault dealer. They're gonna run a diagnostic on her next Tuesday.
Also she's going to be dynoed on Saturday. I suspect that not even 175 bhp will be present judjing by the way she accelerates. Maybe the diagnostic will pick something up.
As for my 182 (no mods...
Yeah there is certainly an increase in power after 5K rpm. I'm aware they're no Integra. Although the car just really feels too slugish and isn't entertaining to drive. Could it be an air flow meter that is malfunctioning?
Same story about falsified hp figures by TVR also, but much more so! Thanks for your replies. I've started using V-Power in the Clio. Yeah will probably take a tank or so before it adjusts to the benefit of the extra octane.
I purchased my 182 Cup the other day. OK I hadn't tried anybody elses before buying this one as it is such a nice example.
However, even though the engine feels fine it's doesn't climb through the rev range as a car with 182 bhp should. As I drove it home I could tell it doesn't pull as I feel...
Just bought myself an 05' 182 Cup.
My friend owns an 06' Fiesta ST (K&N induction kit + cat back exhaust). Suspect he's good for circa 155 bhp with the mods.
Just gone up against him. To be honest I had to nail it as hard as I could to keep up. We both had equal starts. I suspect my Clio is...
Yeah I can imagine. They aint the most careful! Then again it didn't make that much of a difference as when the wheel was removed the tyre proved to be punctured outside the repairable parameters according to the technician (about 3cm from the inside side tyre wall) also a slight bulge was...
Excellent! Hoping it's within those parameters! Off to ATS or Kwik Fit. Woe be tide those monkeys should they scratch the alloy. The whole car is immaculate. Only bought it on Wednesday!
Thanks for you help everybody. Appreciated!:D
Thanks for your comments guys.
I'm not certain but with vulcanising I'm pretty sure the tyre is sent away for repair. I could get a new tyre immediately but, not the cheapest solution. I was hoping that I wouldn't need to stretch to buying a 182 Cup wheel to place the returned tyre upon or...
Just bought myself an '05 182 Cup the other day. Talk about bad luck, Just had a puncture.:(
Obviously there's no spare wheel. The can of tyre inflator/tyre sealant says only to run the tyre for 30 miles, no more.
The tyre is going to need to be vulcanised I presume. This means it'll need to...

Hello,
I'm seriously considering purchasing a Clio 172 Cup. I wondered if you could spare your knowledge on what the reliability is like in owning one? Also sevicing costs etc. Also any faults to look for when checking one over?
This information would be of GREAT help to me. Thank you for you...
