I only go into 5th at 30mph if all I need do is hold/maintain a steady speed - a slight gradient or needing to accelerate labours the engine and is very inefficient, so I drop one to 4th until I'm where I need to be.

My Cup is currently showing 46.1 mpg after about 90 miles since a fill up with Optimax, and that's from holding everyone up accelerating reeeeeeeeally slowly (I'm in 5th from just before 30mph normally).
I do it everytime I fill up...almost obsessive LOL - I like to see how...
In my experience they can't be faulted for track use, standing up to some serious abuse lap after lap after lap.
On the road though, I'd say there's little difference over a standard set-up unless you drive like a nutter.
It's not the gear change that affects consumption, but how much you push the loud pedal.
Change gear however you like but keep only the lightest possible touch on the throttle and you'll use far less fuel.
It's not how you change gear, but how quickly (or slowly) you want to accelerate...

How many of those do you think have changed their standard headunit for something aftermarket?
On road or track, I personnaly prefer to be in control, and that means brake application or throttle lifts when I want them...not when a box-of-tricks designed by some random Renault bod thinks I need them.
There's nothing worse than being on a nicely entered corner, the car takes a set as...
I was thinking more along the lines of on-track tuition, learning how to extract the most from the limited performance on offer...like learning throttle control out of corners (instead of mashing the pedal and letting the ECU control the wheelspin)...or understanding what the car's "saying" as...

I think the technical spec of the 197 looks pretty good, they just loaded it down with all that crap that doesn't add to the 'drive' and bogs it down...
If it goes on a diet now, it might be light enough to call itself a proper Cup when they finally release it in 18 months or so.
Miracle! Mine turned up 10 mins after I'd posted this.
Interesting read on the 197 - it seems they've really worked hard to engineer something that handles really well, with 215 tyres, and some RS only major suspension components.
But only an extra 14bhp...to shift (in my case anyway) an...
