Just to confirm, you have disconnect the gear linkage and tried to get it into reverse directly on the gearbox selector?

So that's where my PAS pump went... New one in. A little whine from cold but it's not a new pump - anything that isn't actively producing shrapnel is a win. Had to notch the mount as this pump's angle is slightly different. Had to wait a week for washers. Halfords don't sell them...

Everything should be able to go in through the top. In an ideal world you support the gearbox with a jack, remove the big nut, release the jack and the spindle should drop out. Failing that you may need a hammer to knock the spindle out. In my case I did replace the spindle as the seller...

I had the same on my 1.2 but thought it was dead - similar story with the mashed rubber seal. Resistor is a good shout to tidy it all up.

If no EML then just remove the canister and zip-tie the faulty solenoid out the way 👀 Think how much faster it will be with the weight savings

What exactly was changed on the gear linkage? and was it like-for-like? I have come across different versions that are not compatible. To answer your question no that amount of movement is not normal. Regarding the engine knock when moved, it shouldn't do that either. To me it sounds clonky...
