Attempting clutch on 172, advice needed!!

OK, I took the cover plate off again and it's pretty obvious when you hold the friction plate up to the flywheel. It will only go one way.

Attempting clutch on 172, advice needed!!

Got my gearbox off without too much trouble, but you don't need to remove the bumper or the hub, brakes etc. on the right. I just took the bottom two nuts off the lower ball joint to wishbone, disconnected the axle support from the engine and swung the hub out from the bottom. Took a few whacks...

Attempting clutch on 172, advice needed!!

Something has happened to my clutch at only 62,000km so I am about to do this job too. Changed the belts only about two months ago and plan to do it with the engine in place. The subframe comes off pretty easily you just have to take 4 bolts out that connect to the steering rack and lower the...

Suspension creak - anyone had similar?

Mine was making those exact noises. I had changed the rollbar bushes a while ago, but made no difference. It was coming from the wishbone bushes. The rubber had come unglued from the metal shell. The whole wishbone had moved forward slightly. Came out pretty easy with a ball joint press and the...

    Known Mileage/Age Cambelt failures

I've had my 172 since new in 2004. Here in Mexico the change interval for the belt is 63,000km or 4 years, never understood why. When in the UK it's 72,000 miles or 5 years. First belt I changed after 4 years at 20,000 miles. I have just changed it again after another 13 years, but only added...

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

I'm still working on it, had to go away for a week. Just a few things to tighten up and swap over the tie rod ends.

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

It is a bit of a pig of a job. I think the easiest is to lower it still attached to the subframe.

Also, is a standard 1.6 Clio rack the same as the Sport rack?

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

Needless to say, the Chinese rack is the wrong size. Called Renault and they want £1,000 for one. Have you used the kit of seals on ebay, the photo only shows one O ring and I've seen 3 already and haven't even opened up the pinion.

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

I half filled the reservoir after I had the car raised and the oil just went straight through and out of the dust covers. Is there a pressure relief valve somewhere in the system? I have a cheap Chinese rack coming today, wouldn't want the same thing happeni ng again. Sent from my...

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

The seal looks fine, I can't see the spring without levering back the rubber' which would probably do irreparable damage. The oil must have got past this seal though as the boot was full of oil. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

I got the end cap out pretty easily, but it looks like I'll have to use the rack to knock out the seal, does it come out in either direction? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G891A using Tapatalk

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

Thanks for all the info, the car has only done 30,000 miles so the rack is in very good condition. It didn't have any leaks till I steered without engine assistance at which point it blew the seals at either end and dumped all the fluid in the entire system. If I can get the end seals out...

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

I have removed the rack and have to get the seals out, but they are behind the steel plate in the photo. How does this come out, looks like you would have to unscrew it, but there is also what appears to be a wire clip in the hole on the tube (second photo).

Steering rack pissed all the fluid out

Car cut out today and wouldn't start. Luckily I could roll backwards to the house, but obviously had no power steering. When I did get it started all the power steering fluid drained out from the bellows on either end of the rack. I suppose it's blown some seals out, but which ones? From what...

    Exhaust mounts

There is, I filled the lower gaps of mine with RTV. There is no extra vibration and it's been on there for 7 years so far and still good.

Engine mount, cambelt side. Changed, but feels worse than the old mount.

They were one of the worst things I did to mine. I fitted just the top engine mount first, because the original was torn in two after 6,000 miles from new. The vibration was terrible, everything vibrated, the doors, something at the front which I think was the windscreen wiper mechanism, the...
