Thanks for all the info. It did sound like the top of the front screen so that'd make sense.
Blab on a much as you like... It all helps mate. I don't want to end up as the same position as you, especially as its a bit of fun for the weekend and nothing more.
I've just rang about a 172. Sounds like a nice car but the heater is stuck on the hot setting (it's got climate control). The seller is saying its something to do with a motorised flap in the system but I'm guessing if it's an easy fix, he would have repaired this.
Is it a known issue and a big...
Thanks. I was nearly going ahead with the original one but the responses here have hopefully saved me some money. I've messaged the eBay advert seller.
Out of interest, what's the interval for cambelts in years\miles?
Thanks
Something like this perhaps?

I'd like something as standard as possible for insurance reasons etc.
Well to be honest, normally these garages throw all sorts of paperwork at you showing how "good" the warranty is but in this case, he nothing to show me... at all! I was pretty amazed to be honest as normally you can't walk out without them trying to sell it you, but I was actually asking all...
Ah that'd be great if that's all it needs. I find it really handy on my main car.
Prim amazed £2000 is at the high end... Seems such a lot of car for the money! The main thing I want is peace of mind though and if I buy private, it could be a problematic car.
This car will get a "health...
To be honest, I was thinking its a seal but I've had cars that whistle in the past from new so wasn't sure if it's just a 172/Clio trait :S Seemed to be coming from the top of the front windscreen.
Hi guys,
Ive been a lurker of this forum for a while. Recently though, I've been looking for a fun weekend toy and a few days ago, a 172 came up at a non-Renault mainstream dealership. It was taken in part-ex and I've just driven it.
The car has covered just over 70k, it's a phase 2 172 and...
An exhaust isn't too bad so you might be fine leaving it on. I'm currently looking for a 182 though and for me personally, I want a completely standard car.
Also, I've found insurance is pretty high so for any prospective buyer, the less mods they have to declare, the better for them... and...
 Okay mate, I do understand the way buying a car works... this will be my 22nd car and I'm 26.
My question in the first place was simply if anyone could recommend other places to look for 182's other than the places I've been looking. I'm not in any desperate rush and there really...
I haven't turned it away mate :D
Thing is, I've only been looking for 2 days and already have found several cars with the mileage I want at the price I want. There are PLENTY of 182's for sale so I can be picky... I do a lot of miles as we go away a lot of weekends so the less miles it's got...
Rang about that one before funnily enough.
It's got outstanding finance that needs to be paid off and he won't drop the price as a result. Also has had 5 owners.
Sounds okay apart from that but does need belts doing like you say.
I've been searching the AutoTrader, Pistonheads and eBay for a Clio 182 with the Cup suspension pack. I've found the odd one that fits the bill but after speaking to the sellers, the cars tend not to be what they first seem in the adverts.
Can anyone recommend other places to search for one...
Great thanks
Is there any other way of telling if it has the Cup suspension pack... My paranoid side is thinking that the grey wheels could have just been bought off eBay ion the past and I doubt I'd be able to measure if the car's 4mm lower.
You may have seen my thread a couple of weeks ago asking if I could get a decent 172 for £3000. Well I've since scrubbed that idea as I now want a 182.
I've only sat in one so far but I liked it and I'm sure I'll love the driving experience so I'm not too worried there.
The thing I can't...
I'm currently with FluxDirect who are part of the same company but will give them a call tomorrow anyhow. If they give me a good quote I'll let you know
Is it cheaper on a Cup because of the lack of an air con unit?
Thanks for the info. After hearing so much about the belts I think if I end up with a 172, I'd only buy one that's had all of that done already.
That was what I expected but I've tried my current insurer for my car, my current insurer for my van and business, confused.com, swiftcover, compare the market, gocompare... I don't trust the comparison sites but the cheapest on those is £850... with an excess of £850!!!
Just ridiculous.
Sorry to hear that... After years of driving, I still don't get how these insurance companies work. They're like women lol.
It's all just a massive con and unfortunately, I'm running out of options with the Clio idea now.
Might have to head down the girlie route and go for an MX-5 or...
Thanks... the biggest obstacle right now is insurance.
I'm 26 with 6 years protected no claims, no history of claims etc and the quotes for a £3000 Clio 172 are coming out at more than I'm paying for my £19,000 MINI!!!
I would do if it was a viable option but I just can't justify the cost anymore. I know it's a piece of metal but I'll miss it lots :S:dapprove:
Will check my PMs now.
Sorry I should have been clearer. Basically, I have a van for my business and a car at the weekends. We tend to go away a lot at the weekends and that usually tends to be far, far away from lovely rainy Manchester :D
So although the car is a "toy", it also needs to stop my girlfriend moaning...
Good links! Thanks for those
It's good to see you're all a bunch of nice people on here :D
Insurance is a lot more than I'd expected but I'm sifting through insurance companies right now.
Thanks for the replies :-)
In what ways is the Phase 1 better than the Phase 2?
I do a fair few long trips throughout the year so a few gadgets may come in handy :-)
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and a newbie with the Clio 172.
I'm considering buying a "toy" for the weekend but would really like to spend no more than £3000 + insurance etc.
I'm therefore considering a 172 as there seem to be a few around below £3k. I do like the Phase 1 but prefer the looks...
