Just so you all know - it was the alternator - new one has been fitted and all is running well with the car. There was some screeching whilst on full lock but this is apparently because the belts and pulleys are self-adjusting. Thank you to everyone who helped!

Thank you very much for the advice Mick! My new alternator has arrived as a friend kindly took a look at the car and confirmed that the alternator is kaput. Got to wait until the 2nd Jan to have it fitted though!! If it transpires that it wasn't the alternator after all, I'll update this thread...
