I just had another look and that hole aligns perfectly with the crank. There is also a cut out in the crank that would make it possible to lock it with the cyl closest to the gearbox in its top position, through that hole.
It seems that the mechanic forgot to mount a plug in that hole after...
I finally had a breakthrough with my mysterious oil leak (front side of block, main suspect oil dipstick tube). After removing the oil pan, which wasnt all that fantastic, and the dipstick tube I found a hole in the engine block!!

I have a strange problem with my Clio Mk2 Ph1 172. Oil is coming out from where the oil dipstick tube is connected to the engine block. When I pop the hood the front side of the block and also the electric fan is sprayed with oil.
