6th Gear!

  RenaultSport clio 182
I could definately use a 6th gear in my 182! The legal speed limit in some highways in the UAE is up to 160 km/h (100 miles/h) and the rpm is just too high at that speed to be maintained! Even at 140 km/h it's around 4,250 rpm! Man what were RenaultSport guys thinking?!

  BMW M3
I was just thinking that about 1 hour ago.... I thought that they would have sorted it out in the new 197 but the 6th gear ratio is even shorter !!!

75mph at 4000rpm...no thanks !!

Not motorway machines !!

6th gear is usually to give u a closer ratio, so ur in the power band when u make a change.

is the 197 capable of 60mph in 2nd?

I know what you mean mate...i drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi everyday and cruise between 130km/h and 140km/h but have blasts upto 200km/h. You weren't in a silver 182 by any chance were you?

Talking of which - how on earth is the 197 going to get to 60 in around 7 seconds when there's gonna have to be an extra gear change needed to get there in that time?

1st!!! cause if its not bone dry its useless for putting any power down.

Agreed..

Tho the 182 seems to drive slighty different that 172 as i've driven both in different stages of tune etc...

5th by a LONG way!

1st is fine unless it's really wet?

eh ? in both 172`s ive owned i couldnt use first without massive torque steer and wheel spin even on a v hot day it still gives you gip.
my vote goes to almost useless and short 1st gear.

1st imo is the worst gear, unless a hot summer dry day! The 182 does need a 6th gear, its just to noisey in 5th. Its done on purpose though, sitting at 85 in 5th doing 4.5k revs, so if you floor it, 100 will fly by without too much hassle!

I agree too, almost impossible to get a good 0-60 time when its not perfectly dry.

Had a nasty experience with 2nd once, put my foot down when the roads were slippery, wheel spin, then the back shot round!!!! WTF! I was only going around 15-20mph ESP did crap all, good job I caught it. Was a real shock seeing as its FWD

I like the first gear as well. I have no problems with it - sure it took some getting used to, but once i did, its absolutely no problems.

Though i think some people treat the throttle as an on/off switch.

Thats the same with all clios.. if its wet or in fact aything but bone dry they just spin all over the place.

I cant understand the complaining about the gearing in the clio. Its a hot hatch. Maybe i am just old school but always felt that 4000rpm at 80 was par for the course in a car geared for good acceleration.

Maybe you lot should buy a diesel - chip it and you'll be burning off M3s whiles sitting at 2000 revs at 80 mph. Whoopee do!

Not all hot hatches are screaming at that speed. I agree that the gearing for 5th should have been longer.

John, no actually my 182 is Racing Blue. I do the same cruising startegy at that highway!

John,

The first autocross race of the season was last Friday and took place in Ajman. I sent u a pm, if u r interested in attending or racing i'll update u with the schedule. In the first race, we have about 3 stock 182's (including mine) in the 2 liter category, a slightly modified 182, and a highly modified 172 cup. There are 3 highly modified clio Williams too.

There is a novice category too if u r interested in getting started.

See u soon

Firstly WTF?, surely some of you dont expect to be able to nail full throttle first gear launches without having to show some restraint? Short shifitng at about 5k rpm in 1st is the trick and/or some degree of throttle control. I'm shocked that anyone wouldnt expect not to have to control wheel spin in a 1080kg FWD 180bhp hatch back. Is the standard of driving in this country really getting that lazy??

Secondly, WTF? You should never be in 5th gear at 80mph. 4th is good for 115mph FFS. Go get a diesel Mondeo or something :D

1st gear does need foot control due to lack of proper LSD. However never being in 5th gear at 80mph is only applicable when u need to extract full power from the engine when racing or dragging. It does not apply for prolonged highway cruising.

I dont know what cars youve driven but 1st gear in the clio is a very good gear. If its in the wet you dont give it full,if its in the dry and youve got a good set off tyres give it full and it should grip no problems. Try booting a remapped diesel in 1st 2nd and 3rd- then you will realise the clio puts its power down very well, and 1st gear is pretty decent for grip and 0-35mph in a very quick time

The point is that 1st gear is a very quick gear and its very easy to control providing the driver has even a medium level of skill and isnt still wet behind the ears.

Obviously the 5th gear comment was made largely in jest :S

D

dick

iv a 1.2,

1st = 200 revs for every mile an hour
2nd = 100 revs for every mile an hour
forget 3rd n 4th
5th = 50 revs for every mile an hour

and its begging more mercy just cruising along a motorway.

was talking to someone about it today in his leon. why cant they have a 6th gear if they want to save the f**king planet which doesnt hardly accelerate at all for motorway driving.

bring it down from like 4k to about 2.5k
makes sence to me anyway
