Advice Please

I sold my clio at the weekend, but 2hrs after the lad purchased it a coolant hose split. I felt awful, went over to help him and used my AA membership to get car sorted. And offered to give him his money back and take car off his hands again.
He said he wanted to keep it, so I told him to replace all the coolant hoses on the car and I would pay for it. Either standard pipes or if he wanted samco, etc I would cover cost of fitting and put a bit towards the silicone hoses (to the value of a standard set).
It's the least I could do, as I felt like I'd sold him a faulty car. Although it had been running fine for 6 months and flew through it's mot the day before with no advisories.
I know people will say it's sold as seen, but that doesn't seem honest.
But here's my dilemma, after I've paid for the coolant system to be sorted. What happens if in 2 weeks time a wire snaps or it blows something ?
How long is a reasonable time before I say "it's your problem now mate" especially considering I offered to have the car back off him.

  dan's cast offs.
  • can't moan at you for saying what you did, could be expensive though for full set of new genuine hoses.

You did a nice thing imo. But that's it now, anything else is his responsibility.

It does make me laugh the whole 'fook him it's sold as seen' but sometimes just being a nice guy is the good way to be. Rightly or wrongly.

As above - sold as seen blah blah blah.

Had I just bought a car privately I wouldn't think of going back to the former owner should an issue arise!

Depends how well you got on with the seller/buyer. And what type of person you are, imo

I wouldn't have had the balls to ring you tbh. Once I pay for a car and drive it away I see it as 100% my problem if I break down.

You did a decent turn and you owe him nothing more.

That is a very noble jesture you did. If only there were more people out there like yourself.

However, I was born a cynic. I would personally do the cooling system since you have agreed to it and cut your ties there. Some people who see the goodwill of others also see it as a licence to be careless and abuse the goodwill of others as well. After the cooling hose ordeal I would leave the car to him.

OTOH maybe I deal with cretins when it comes to buying secondhand cars.

Genuinely that is one of the nicest things ive ever heard during a car sale. Most people do say "as soon as its gone, its your responsibility" but sometimes they could be miles away from home with no help, so you did a really good thing there, well done to you.

As for the future, it is his responsibility now - you have sold him the car AND you've gone above and beyond to help. Now it is his responsibility to maintain the car as is.
