Am i driving a tractor

I know its been talked about before, but do any onther valver / Willy owners experience tractor like noises when the car is cold, especially when left for a couple of days? Seems fine when it gets warm. My low milage williams doesnt do this, so is it just the age?

If you know its been talked about before then other users must experience this, try searching past threads for the answers.

Been discussed quite a few times.

There was a thread not too long ago about this.

Many people believe its down to what oil you use, but personally this hasnt been the case with mine.

*ripped from another thread*

What you are hearing is mostly piston slap , the light alloy pistons are not round when cold more an oval shape and as they travel up and down the cylinder they oscillate causing the thrust skirt of the piston to contact the cylinder wall causing the tractorish soundtrack. The colder the ambient temperature the worse it is

My Williams 3 always sounded like a tractor when cold. People kept asking me to plough their fields. All very embarrasing.

it may be something to do with a condition known as "short-run cydrome". my car does a similar noise and is fine once the oils got round

sounds like noisy hydraulic tappets when cold.if you can hear piston slap from inside the car then it sounds like your engines worn.

Mine does it under cold... it just seems to me its those pesky hydraulic tapets not getting oil quick enough, i leave my car running 4 a few minutes when cold before going anywhere and it goes away pretty quickly.

Also if your oils low it gets really bad... gotta keep a eye on that dial ;)

Hmmmm, maybe. But if Williams engines with 70,000 on the clock are doing it too, i cant see it being a bad wear problem. From what we know of the engine a 70,000 miler should be fine in terms of engine wear.

Its all totally normal and nothing to worry about in moderation. All 16V and Williams engines make this noise.

Its not a wear issue, its due to the tappets draining and cold viscous oil taking a long time to fully prime the tappets. When it warms its less viscous an has an easier life.

I have owned 3 different clios, all have done this, only after a couple of days standing, best thing to do is to start the car everyday just to get the oil round! but i must admit it is a bit disheartning when you hear your pride and joy making funny noises!

Totally off topic...but does the 172 also have hyrdraulic tappets?
The 172 doesnt use tappets. It has roller followers which is why it cna run such an acressive cam profile.....its really rather chunky. This roller follower (like an arm with a roller bearing on the elbow) is pivoted on one end (like a shoulder) via a hydraulic pivot which takes up the clearances. The other end (the hand) pushes on the valve stem tip.

still basically a hydraulic tappet just a different setup.

i was reffering to the cam lobe profiles such as flat noses, fast acceleration, flanks, ramps etc etc, not cam timings (which are wild for a production car, but not considered wild as such.
