Antivirus?

Just wondering what you lot advise as good antivirus? Free would be great but cheaper the better. I did search but its coming up with old threads.

I ask as I recently got a laptop and as my others always had a short life I want this one to last a big longer hopefully. Cheers.

Also any other tips on how not to destroy a laptop in 6 months I'll be glad to hear lol.

Are cleanups needed often and what are they and how do you do it?

I used to use Microsoft security essential but I think windows 8 already has it built in. I'm sure someone will be along soon to correct me if I'm wrong.

Avast is amazing, the free one is good

Personally I don't even run antivirus I found it too annoying when installing games and programs and downloading s**t, but if your not 100% tech savvy I'd recommend avast free

One thing I would say is run adblock on chrome, that does a good job at removing all the crap and generally avoids you accidentally clicking on something you didn't want

This alone is not an ideal way of protecting your PC mate. Time after time it places last in the security / malware tests and it is not designed to be a hardcore line of defence against malicious software and virus infection. I would recommend looking at a 'proper' solution to be on the safe side :)

Personally I use a combination of BitDefender and MalwareBytes across my various machines. Inexpensive, relatively lightweight / thin client and unobtrusive. All good :) Of course, it helps if you don't go visiting dodgy interwebz sites in the first place... LOL!

Cheers all I installed the avast and it all seems okay so far. Also added the adblock onto chrome of course so that helps too I guess.

Stupid thing took forever to update 149 updates got to 131 and was stuck on that for a few hours so I shut it off and it turned on all okay and configured the update. Then had to do some more updates when logged in, did wonder if it would ever end lol but its all up and running now. Nice to have a computer at home again .
