Athlon 64 FX-57 for under £100!!

  172 Cup
Rather than spend £700 on an Athlon 64 FX-57 take one server rated AMD Opteron 144 (CABNE 0540) with standard heatsink, a DFI Lanparty UT nF4 Ultra-D motherboard and a few hours tweaking and we end up with the end result below..

Not bad for a humble 1.8ghz server processor. Unfortunately everyone's realised the potential of these processors and they're out of stock everywhere...

If I can boot Ed off his new PC with the FX57 in it I'll benchmark that to compare later.

Most retailers wont tell you what the stepping code is so I purchased mine from http://www.cpucityshop.co.uk/ as they told me what stepping it was before I placed the order.

CAB2E's were very popular and some people acheived 3ghz from their 144's. CABNE 0540's aren't bad, CABYE's seem less succesful and I can't really comment on the others...

You can tell what the popular (successful) stepping codes are by seeing what is popular on Ebay. Obviously no-one wants a duff overclocker so the less succesful stepping codes don't tend to sell.

Its damn near impossible getting hold of opterons now :/

Still wouldnt trade my dual core in for one like.

Griff, could you tell me the manufacturer's part number of the CPU. Thanks

Opteron 144 - What actual cpu (stepping code) you end up with is simply the luck of the draw.

got myself a 4400+ at the moment quite happy with it sitting at 2.5ghz only using the stock cooling at the moment although i did manage to get a few benchmarks done with it at 2.7ghz which aint bad for stock cooling. Just wanted to see what it could do.

Griff is that with stock cooler......Im using a Dfi lanparty board and currently run a wincheter 3000 64 chip...and got hold of a opteron 144 very cheap and still havent fitted it.im unsure on what to do the opterons brand new (144) and unused these seem to be going for a hell of alot more than a winnie chip on ebay.

What do you think i should do sell the opteron for £100+ or keep the winnie chip in as they are both 3000+ do you think id see much of an increase even if i up the clock to 2.2ghz from the standard 1.8ghz which ive heard i could get easily on the stock cooler maybe more.

oh yea my steppings:

CABNE 0540

Is this seen as a better clocker?

Put simply a CABNE 0540 with a DFI Lanparty "should" be good for 2.5/2.6/2.7ghz on stock cooling. Add the fact this Opty has a 1mb cache i'd personally much prefer this to a 3000+ winnie.

2500 with stock :eek: I got same chip and got 2.5 but I got a £30 HSF runs at 45 load you temps must be too high lol

Very old thread, but intresting to see how cpu prices fall :)
FX-57 quoted at £700 at start of thread (end of 2005) now FX-62 less than £295.... with the Intel chips forcing AMD's well down in price :)
