auto lights help...........

Hello guys. Probably a really stupid question but be gentle as I only picked up my 2002 172 yesterday!

How do I get the auto lights to work? I have 3 settings, 0, sidelights, headlights. What do I set it to to make them come on automatically when its dark? The guy I bought the car from said set it to 0, but the lights didn't come on when I started the car in the dark.

This is a common thing on here but since nobody has posted i'll answer you!
With the key not in the ignition turn the light toggle as far round as it will go, then back to off position, then repeat this or stop when you hear a beep. Chances are they have just been switched off and to use them you just leave the lights on the off setting and they will operate as and when.

A lot of people on here hate them I think they're great!

WRONG!

1. Make sure lights are off.
2. Put the key in the ignition.
3. Turn to position two (engine should not be on).
4. Switch the lights to sidelights, then back off, then back to sidelights and off again - it should beep at you if you've done it right.

^^^^ thats the correct way but leave them off especially if you park the car in a garage

Yeah that's right same to switch off. I checked and I was right I have done it before without the key being in technically!

People seem to think of them as and intrusion to them having complete control over what their car does when I think. They do come on going through tunnels and sometimes they are 5 mins a bit on the early on late side but in general I think they are handy the only downside is that when I get into cars without them i'm not used to remembering to put them on!
