Dont know if this is a stupid Q or not....

but when you are downloading an Avi WMP doesnt let me preview it, where as it will with an mpeg. why is this?

Install the K-Lite codec pack and play it through Media Player Classic I find that plays most things, I know what you mean about it not play normally though.
