Bridging

  172 Cup

Brun,

Its quite simple really. If you have a 4 channels Amp for example, something like 4x50 watts rms. Bridging means you could "bridge" 2 channels to utilise 2 x 100 watts, or "bridge" all 4 and use it a 1 x 200 watts. Trust me its so simple when you have an amp in front of you.

Griffs right, but when you bridge two channels together, the single channels RMS power should be 3 times the seperate channels RMS power, if it aint then the manufactor is proberly using a different amounts of THD and bandwidth when mesuring the power, they do this so they can bump the figures up.

Bridged should be 4 times RMS for a single channel, Ive got a physics book that says so in front of me! Also, you cant bridge across 4 channels in any amp Ive ever seen before!! You can bridge two stereo channels down to one mono, but you would need some kind of special amp to bridge across 4 channels to get one.

Theyre unlikely to vary bandwith when quoting figures, but they do vary THD levels, as you rightly stated, and also voltage. They assume a perfect 14.4V when in practice youre lucky if youve got 12 on a standard battery.

NOOOOOOOO, never bridge a 4 channel to 1 channel itll blow! 2 channel to 1 - yes, 4 channel to 2 - yes but never 4to1 !!!

well how do you do it guys

i know nothing

ive looked at some amps in Halfords and it wasnt obvious to me at all lol

Bridging is different on different amps, you have to find out if it can be bridged first as not all can without adding an extra external box, on mst amps you simply connect your input to only one side, and then connect the speaker accross the two +ve terminals, some have a switch though, just ask the sales guy or RTFM.

yeah simply u have four terminals left + - and right + - , u just got left + to right + for bridging and the -s are unused. simple.
