Broadband, options and where to look with no land line?

I live in a shared house.

Currently the Landlady has TV and BB with Virgin Media installed.

She wants to ditch the TV for Freeview and Virgin wont supply just BB on its own.

Last time I looked into this kind of thing was years ago and if you used the telephone line you had to pay line rental (obviously)

What is the cheapest option for a stable broadband connection without a land line.. is it even possible? As the Virgin cable belongs to Virgin, doesn't it?

As far as I'm aware, you always require a land line.


I've just set this all up today actually for my new place....

BT land line rental is £13.49 a month, and the connection charge (to get a line) is £127.99

What type of Virgin Broadband is it, if its their cable BB then you can have it on its own, like I do.

If its their "off net" version i.e down a standard phone line then yes, this type of Broadband will always require a physical line which has to be rented off someone, even if a provider doesn't state a rental price, it will be in the overall price of the broadband,

Confused by the Virgin and lack of 'landline'; it says no BT line needed, but then there is a * to '*Plus a Virgin Phone line for £13.90 a month', so do you need to pay this £13.90 even if you opt out of the phone option?

Rob if you signed up for an 18 month deal you could have got the line for £30 http://www.productsandservices.bt.c...oterPopup.jsp?pagecontentfooter_popupid=24641 and could have saved even more if you paid the line rental in advance which works out £10 per month on the line rental saver offer.

Skinny, that confused me too. Best to give them a call becase I think that they just discount it by £13.90

Ok so Virgin provide On Net services i.e cable services, you can either have Broadband Only or Broadband with a Virgin Phone Line, again cable, not BT.

If you are in a none cable area then they provide Off Net services too, the ones that require a BT Phone line

So they didn't mean to put the * on the one without the phone? As if you opt for no phone, then you don't have to pay for the virgin phone line?

To be fair o2 20mb works out about the same price, with line rental included. I think i'll be going with o2, as they're provided by BE, one of the best isps about.
