Broken Gear Linkage?

  1.8 Civic EX
ok bit hard to explain this one...

you know the noise, almost a click sound, that you hear when selecting reverse?

well my car seems to make that same noise randomly when driving around, doesn't seem to be effected by speed, road surface, acceleration/deceleration, direction or anything, just randomly clicks, sometimes hardly at all and others constantly.

If it's had a moment of constantly clicking, I stop, and while stationary, hold the clucth down, select every gear then drive off again it seems to stop.

There is also a fair amount of left/right movement in the gear stick when it's actually in gear and I'm driving along.

I'm thinking gear linkage. Any other culprits it might be? How much for a new one or is it a new gearbox job? Also is it easy to replace?

i've not looked at the clio's, but i know my focus' was easy to replace, 90 quid from the dealer. they can be adjusted, you'd want a haynes or something to tell you how, and make them more responsive (or mess it all up lol!) tho it could be something wrong with the box and that's a lot more...
