Cambelt change but not tensioners.

Arite!

The garage we got our 172 from changed the cambelt just before we picked the car up, but not the tensioners. It's only done 55k, and it 4 years old, so it;s not quite due, but it's bugging me... I questioned the merit of doing the cambelt without the tensioners, but he said they were fine. I trust this guy, as he's looked after my cars for 3 years now without a problem, is it ok, or should I get the tensioners done? How much would it be, any ideas?

Tensioners fail more than the belts tbh the bearing explodes, then its game over. Why would you not change the tensioner and idlers?? Thats just silly

Can you get the kit without the belt? Guessing it's probably the expensive bit... Gonna tell him I want it done (I'll pay for the parts, he can do the labour for free - still under warranty...).

Its a garage, of course they wanted it as cheap as possible. Don't call me a tightarse either I was just stating the obvious, I spent near enough £300 on parts to do mine.

Yes its £140 vs about £20 or so hence why you only go a belt. I'd get them to pay as they haven't done the job properly.

What's Renaults reccomendations? 5yr or 70k? Gonna get it done for peace of mind either way I think. Guessing the Aux belt probably wants done as well, as I have no evidence that it's been done at all...

So I need a price for that part as well... Great fun this.

No need to get touchy mate.. the point is a garage should no better than to change a belt without doin the tensioner. Wether they are cost cutting or not its still not right is it?

I have to admit that I wan't charged for the cambelt change, it was done as a precaution, before I drove the car away. But it's bugging me...

Just as a worst case scenario, what am I looking at in terms of a full, proper belt change? By this I mean cambelt, tensioners, aux belt.

Cambelt kit £150, aux kit £100, cam plugs bout £30 ish all plus vat. Then probably anything between 3 - 5 hours labour depending on where you take it.
