Camshaft Choice....

Ok, thinking of upgrading my valvers cams again for more power (and cos its mainly open road high-rev driving i do) and was wondering what to go for. I currently have a fast road setup but after looking at kentcams, there is a fair old range to chooce from! Can anyone advise me on the difference of each, what i will get and any extra bits i will need??

Id avoid the ones will very long duration, as it means you will only be gaining at high revs, and low down pull and idle will be pish. Also with too much lift you might have to junk your hydraulic followers and invest in solid ones, which I would expect to be pricy. When you say uprate your cams again, do you mean you have reprofiled cams fitted already. If so and they are fast road, I would not change them as the little power you gain with race cams up the top of the rev range, will be heavily offset by poor drivability, race cams are for race use, and could well spoil your road car. Youd be better off getting porting doneto your head if you havent already.

Id stick to fast road..race ones only get a minimal more gains but lose a lot of tractability. The CVH22 is the fast road Kent Cam. Going to 270s to high 280s degrees duration is viable with a modifired head..but as i said you lose a lot of power lot down and probably be disappointed with the results.

Id stick with what youve got and forget what the stupid glossy adverts say.

Ive already got fast road cams (piper - k-tec stage 1) along with the chip and was tempted to go for something a bit more beefy but youre probably right about the power low down - it aint the best a the moment anyway. What would a modd head do anyway? Surely itd just be 2-3 bhp at best??

better flow for higher valve lifts...probably not a huge gain no but the race cams will give practically f**k all gain over a fast road cam anyway. I cant judge accurately though, i know nothing about the F7P..but i can guarantee youll barely notice the diff between what you have now and an upgrade.

Simply changing a cam you wont gain torque, you can only really do this by opening the LCA and reducing duration and cam timing.

You cant gain more power on a ltd capacity engine without using more rpm and that means a cam which works in high rpm ranges......tradeoff being the same profile doesnt work with low engine rpm and low charge velocities.

Its all in the head, and the better the head the milder the cam you can use to retain torque.

So, keep the cam you got and get a worked head, itll be more beneficial than just to continue stepping up the cam ladder for no point.

Exactly. Keep the fast road cam that youve got, you wont see a lot of difference unless youre thinking about a race cam with 300 degree plus duration. The Supersports 278 cam is as far as you can go on the standard hydraulics btw.
