Camshaft seal is leaking??

  Clio 172 Cup
Just having my arb bushes fitted and dogbone bushes fitted, and i've popped round the corner to see how there getting on. They have pointed out there's oil slightly leaking from the cam shaft seal, my cambelt was down by birchdown start of feb. Would they have noticed this? Also is it cambelt off jobby to fix the leak? He said it could get on the cambelt if it gets worse? Advise please.. Thanks :)

I have no idea? Whilst it was up in air he pointed out oil from the cambelt side i didnt look properly but he said it was the cam shaft seal, there was no cover off though? So was he telling porkies?

I had a leak from a similar area and it was suspected camshaft seal. It turned out to be de-phaser pulley seal which the pulley was being replaced anyway.

Luckily, The journey to the garage was when the first bit of oil went on the belt so what caught just in time.

If it was underside, id say more a crank pulley seal although how the cover design is, it covers the area to be 100% sure. As fred has said, seek a 2nd opinion from a specialist. These cars can go very wrong when dealt with incorrectly. To diagnose the camshaft seals the top engine mounting cambelt cover would need to be off and the engine suspended by a brace or hoist. Now i know yours is a cup so its a bit easier but its still not a 2 min job just to check for free!!

take back to whoever did the top end rebuild, i'd put money on them using pikey seals or fitting them wrong, seen it more times than i can count

unfortunately I can't Fred it was a friend of mine who did it who is quite an active user on here this has all happend and he will not do anything and is not admitting to anything so best I can do is get a recommended local garage to do it so do you reckon it those / cam seals because it's coming from under that cover and goin up the thread of the bolts that how the cover on it is booked in for this Thursday I just want to brace my self garage said if it's cam seals it will be £200 worst case if he does the belt cz I've just had it all done inc pulleys I just don't want it to cost no more then that

well "mystery user" you are a bell!

the seal kit is about £30 (which is why a lot of places skip it and charge you the extra £30 in their pocket!)

to fit it though would be 5hours roughly, £200 is a bargain, BUT (and i sound like a broken record here) THEY MUST HAVE ALL 3 CAM LOCKING TOOLS

It's quite easy to push them in too far and they leak. Dephaser seal is a cam seal.

As Fred pointed out you need all 3 locking tools.

But it's also a good idea to have the correct tools for inserting the seals

These ones;-

tip - use the crank pulley, WD40 the seals, turn it round and use the back of it to push them in flush, the lip is bigger than the hole so you can't push them any further than flush - REMEMBER TO CLEAN IT BEFORE REFITTING TO THE CRANK!

I think I know the car, as I made a comment about how he used the correct locking tools yet there was a laser one on the scuttle.

Edit, correct me if I'm wrong please. (Going on the name, location, and work done)

I do the same trick there fred, except I expect like you, I use an old one off an engine I pulled apart ages ago.

so my car was looked at yesterday and the problem has been found it was as said in here the cam seals apparently as told by my mechanic the guy who did the work on my car orignally had put the wrong seal in the inlet hole he had used an exhaust seal in there and apparently when my guy stripped it all down the de phaser was not sitting in there correctly once he had taken that off he could see that it had not been sitting correctly in there because the seal did not fit and apparently the two should be sitting flush on each other he the continued to remove the seal which on removal he found was split in half here are some pictures that i took image (1).jpgimage (2).jpgimage (3).jpgimage (4).jpgimage (5).jpgimage.jpg as you can see from the pictures the gold ring inside the seal i belive should be flat but because it was the wrong seal and did not fit the de phaser just sat on it and bent it then making the brown part of seal split away there was also some marks on one of the pulleys which look like some one has put a set of swan necks on there at some point and slightly mis shaped a tooth
