Morning,

I can't get a simple answer out of the search.

What is this "Cicrclip upgrade" that can be done to gearboxes when being overhauled, and is it worth it.

I'm told it's not as it is possible to screw the diff when welding it in?

Circlip holding the diff gets welded to the "housing" to prevent the diff from popping out. Only ph1s and early ph2s should have the circlip'd diff, later ones got a bolted one.

Agency Transmission should be able to do this without damaging your box...

nice one.

for a daily drive that doesn't get thrashed within an inch every mile, is it neccesary? Does it help with reliability or simimlar?

Driveshaft
Gearbox rebuild & new clutch
bottom ball joints (probably)

anything else worth getting done while it's all out? I asked about a longer 5th gear, but apparently that isn't possible?

is it? Can Agency do it?

And, ultimately, is it as good an idea as I think it might be (slightly lower revs on motorway = more MPG's)

Here in Germany you can get different "ratio-cogs" for the 5th. Every gearbox specialist should be able to fit them. Don't think the 5th is that short from standard so wouldn't bother.

When you get your revs to low the car will drive in a less affective rev range thus resulting in less mpg...
You can use 5th of any jc/jb so also from the r5 1.4 boxes which are longer than yours...

Yeah, I've been wondering how low I can dsrop revs.

Surely 3k is more than enough to pull 70ish?

A diesel cog would just be a disaster Ollie, probably have to red-line 4th just to drop into 5th at 2k! :)
