Clunking noises when I wiggle the steering?!

I noticed today that when I was dirving and went over a speed bump or was turning that there was a small clunk noise, so i pulled over and wiggled the wheel from left to right and there was a series of small clunks! Any ideas what this could be?

I had the same problem, was the track rod end, also it cood be the suspension turret bearing.

yours is a mk1 IIRC? column joint/UJ?

Ive got this, apparantly its the ball joint so having it replaced on tuesday.

Yes mate, there is some play in the column but no more then there was for the last few months! Im pretty sure its not this!

How do i go about checking the ball joint?
