clutch pedal feels strange

when pushing the clutch in it is not smooth. the only way i can describe it is like its going over ridges for the length of its travel
has anyone experienced this problem or know what could be wrong?

The pedal sits on a bar via a plastic joint, this could be worn.. The cable itself might be sticking on movement in the covering, might want greasing, or maybe a clutch problem. try the first two and see if it still continues.
