Im thinking i can store all my films ect on the hdd and then play them back through the ps3.

Yes.

I don't actually know.

But I very much would presume so.

Guess that didn't help.

Sorry.

Yes & no.

It will work but not in NTFS. The drive will need to be FAT32 which is pointless. It also won't play everything natively such as mkv, so those would have to be converted, and be less than 4GB in size.

Just get a media player. End.

^ this.

I've done the same (save film's, tv shows etc) onto my portable HDD. I've then plugged it into my laptop and stream them to my ps3 via ps3 Media Server - very easy to do!

I used to do the same but got pissed off with the PS3 not doing wireless N so I switched to a media player. I keep all my media on external drives anyway so just plug them in when needed. I also found that the PQ is slightly better than when streaming with PS3 Media Server. They say the quality isn't affected but it is. Proven first hand :)

Still awesome though.

as said, no need to connect as they don't work. Home streaming is great and all files work well. Just set up your media player to share and it should find the PS3. Just accept it as ok and away you go. Takes a bit of getting used to how the PS3 recognises the files (mine has files on that aren't on my media player for some wierd reason). Obviously you have to have wifi ;)

Media player <> media server.

A software server such as PS3 Media Player has to stream to a capable device such as the PS3 or other media player. Media player = PS3 or WDTV Live (and many many others).

Best bet for the OP is just to stream to the PS3 with PS3 Media Server, but it'll have to be a wired connection if he wants to play 1080p content.

They both work if they're FAT32. Most USB sticks are FAT32 by default in my experience. HDDs also have a higher current draw but I'm unsure on what the PS3 can and can't power.

FAT32 is s**t.

Too right, trying to work with HD footage with Fat32 is a nightmare.

But when you need to transfer from PC to Mac etc there's nothing else...is there?

Best solution = don't buy Macs they're shite ;)

Can Open, Worms everywhere :D

FAT32 is limited to 4GB file sizes. No quality difference.

NTFS works under OSX. By default it's read only but a small download enables read & write. Piece of piss. I use my NTFS drives under Windows and OSX. Another myth busted ;)

Lol, b****cks, there is nothing wrong with fat32, it's only limit is the 4gb thing, hardly a massive issue, I don't have any files bigger than 4gb, but then I don't download inferior quality blurays rips, I get the real thing, only use my external hard drives for HD tv which isn't in HD over here.

I've not found an external hard drive which isn't powered by the ps3 but then I do have the non-pauper 60gb edition.

If you want to watched ripped HD films then a media server drive sounds like the right thing, if it's just tv rips then external hard drive is fine.

LOL at your fanboy crusade. You know it is ok to own something and not love it like a child? FAT32 is a MASSIVE limitation to anyone into HD video.

Because FAT32 is ok for you does not mean it's ok for everyone else, and doesn't mean it's 'b****cks' when someone correctly points out the limitations of it. There is no real reason to use FAT32 unless it's to blindly defend it because that's what you have to use with your beloved PS3.

Bloody hell. Do you have Sony pyjamas?

So just because it doesn't work for you it also b****cks? Works both ways!

I use mine for HD video and have no issues, like I said, most portable hard drives are fat32 anyway, every one I have bought is, males them more compatible with things, ps3's, macs etc.

No fanboy here, as you know I have both consoles, but if someone already has media files on an external drive, it's poss easy to play them without having to buy anything extra or use crappy streaming over unreliable wifi.

I know the quality is fine but if you've worked with HD footage the file sizes are usually f**king huge if you've recorded anything over a certain time.

And lulz at the can if worms, I still have a PC for certain things but you CANNOT beat a wide screen iMac with FCP 7 for video editing. Trust.

mkv2vob is very good at taking .mkv files and making them compatible with the PS3, often without needing to reencode. Automatically splits the files at 4GB too if you ask it too.

FAT32 is a bit of a pain but not a huge issue.
