contacts storage to use with itunes

Guys,

I want to backup my contacts onto my laptop, which is currently running windows, and sync it with my iphone, but when i sync actually are in the iphone format? first name, last name, company, photo, email etc

The standard windows contacts software doesnt really look any good theres to many columns which arent needed for what i want. I am considering using mobileme but am not paying the premium.

Is there any good Free software i can use to manage on my PC without too many columns?

I use the standard 'contacts' on Win 7, can't say I've had a prob, works well. Don't know of any better solution either, sorry.

Syncing diary is where the problem starts for me.
