Crank pulley question.

  Megane r26
I've done a few cambelt changes on clio sports now, I'm a volvo technican an have all the genuine renault timing tools I obtained from renault myself.

But just a quick question really to see what you guys use to free off stubborn crankshaft pulleys, now when I changed the belt on my first 172 as soon as I removed the bottom aux pulley an removed cambelt the crank pulley good as fell off an was nice an free on the crank but on my last car (my old 197) it was a bit more stubborn.

I resorted to using a copper drift to gently knock it round an free it off (copper drift being used as the its soft an will damage copper before the pulley).

Now just wondered if any of you guys have any other device or method for removing/freeing these off?

Cheers Dan

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
i usually give a good spray of penetrating oil, then use an old pry bar with the end nicely rounded off as a drift to knock the sprocket round.

Sweet, so I'll just carry on with my method.

Cheers Danny

Well seeing as your a technican, why not buy the proper Outer crank shaft pulley pullers...... there a great bit of kit, and the pulley draws off in seconds.... clamps nicely into the ribs, you shouldnt be prying on em really with a bar etc.. as they crack or chip easily.

Same for the inner toothed pulley, nice puller to hook round it & draw it off.

Its the inner toothed pulley I'm on about mike, a colleague mentioned one of these pullers. Never had a problem with an aux bottom pulley, usually a few taps with Mac tools dead blow plastic hammer shocks them off.

Do you use one you could recommend?

yea i knew which one u meant dan, i bought two pullers.... as ive had a few aux pulleys sieze to the crank aswell. The Auxillary one is a bit of a special one, sealey make one, or Sykes pickavant, as for the inner one.... i just use a basic thin 3 legged puller with a thread in the middle to draw it off. If you have a method which works though, then stick with it :)

Yeah I have a method, same one I've always had but always good to have a trick up me sleeve. What brand was the small 3 legged puller?
