difference

The dci 65 has a small turbo and no intercoller, the 80 runs a bit more turbo boost and has intercooler and different injectors. dci 80 also has a better gearbox similar to 172. The dci 100 has uprated turbo, injectors, intercooler, pistons, different intake but a crap gearbox.

I thought all Clio gearboxes were garbage including 1*2's?

It's the sole reason a friend of mine won't bite the bullet and buy a 172.

It's just remapped. You can buy a 65 and then for £300 get the same car that costed a few grand more..

Plenty of threads on here detailing differences on all the models including dci's.

Oooh, link?

Relatively speaking they're not great!

The DCI 80 uses the same box as the 172, just with longer ratios.

Would have thought the ratios would be shorter...?

Shorter ratios mean less top speed, better acceleration. Higher the number (as a ratio to 1) the shorter the gear.

The DCI's only rev to 4.5-5k rpm. If they had the same ratios as a 172 they wouldn't even be able to hit 100mph in top gear. So longer/taller gears are needed.

Seeing as they only need about 5k I assumed the ratios would be shorter but I see what you mean due to them having less power they need more time to build the speed. ;)

search for "dci differences" and tick the search thread titles and have a read through. Theres a few in the trade that dread the dci100 gearbox, theres been one or 2 posts on here with members that have had problems. To be honest the dci100s are quite rare. You can buy a dci 65 and get it mapped to around 80hp, the gearbox is very similar iirc. Im sures theres a few that have fitted a intercooler too.
