Disadvantages of buying a 2nd hand camera?

Providing its been looked after etc are there any?

Usually shutter life is an issue. As it is a moving part, thats one thing you should watch out for. Cameras like the 1D mkIII are rated to about 200,000 clicks but its usually not the end all of problems.

I usually just buy a second hand body by condition.

If you buy from somewhere reputable then I wouldn't say it's a problem. Definately take quite a few shots and then view them on screen to make sure everything as you think it should be.

I read a guide ages ago about taking a newspaper along with you and taking a pic of that then view the image at 1:1 and see what the sharpness of the text is like.

I haven't ever bought 2nd hand, but at the right price I would.
