eBay performance filter

  Renault Clio 1.2 16V
Anyone had any experience with a cone air filter from eBay, as in mpg improvement? It will be going on a 2001 1.2 expression. And I know it will make the car sound stupid but if it saves me money I can live with that

I'm guessing it won't improve performance either

If it was that simple they would make the throttle body massive to let loads of air in if it helped fuel economy and didn't effect performance. The best thing you can get is a panel filter from the likes of K&N/Pipercross/RamAir for the standard airbox.

Right so should I buy a panel filter instead?

Honestly mate I was just goin off the eBay description which says it gives better mpg, I think I should of asked on here first haha

You're obviously pretty new to this sort of stuff and that's cool! We all have to learn somewhere! :) Google "heat soak" and "Induction kits" you will soon learn the pros and cons of the cone filter v panel filters v proper induction kits/systems.

I personally rate panel filters/closed air box induction kits. Renault invested a lot of money in engineering the car as do most/all car manufacturers and they tend to get these sorts of things right!

If I were you, I would spend some time looking at the pros and cons to modifications that people do and look on here and other forums at what people rate and don't rate. And DONT believe anything in eBay adverts, especially the eBay Super Chips and electric super chargers!! Haha

Yeah I am quite new to it, how could you tell ;) that's one of the reasons I joined to lean more, mainly because of how much I like clios tho. And yeah I've heard of those electric superchargers haha I'll have a google at work tomorrow thanks for the help mate :)

I've heard they do because more air gets into your engine

The only time that is true, is if your standard one is clogged up really, as they are very free flowing anyway.

So to answer your question fully.

Will it improve mpg?
If your MPG is currently suffering as a result of a filthy air filter then yes, if not then no.

The car is 13 years old and I'm not sure if it's filter has been changed so do you reckon it would?

Just to add to what Chip has said. If your current filter is old and needs changing then IME a standard panel filter will do just fine on your engine.

Pros of a standard filter:

1. its cheaper
2. less heat soak
3. designed to work well enough on a 1.2

Cons (and there is only 1 really)... it will need replacing every once in a while

Pros of a panel filter (for your car again only really 1 of these)... most are cleanable

Pros of a cone filter:

1.noise.. if your into this kind of thing
2.cleanable

Cons of a cone filter:

1. heat soak
2. expensive
3. no performance gains to be had MPg or otherwise (unless original is old and dirty as stated above)

Thanks for all that info, I'll check the filter out and if it needs replacing I'll just go for a standard one (y)

The other con on an ebay cheapy, is that it may not actually filter air very well, which is important, look at the "ktec filter of death" that has wrecked quite a few throttle body engines to see what happens if the wrong filter is used!

I'll have a look but I'm probably gunna go with a standard one after reading all that haha! Don't wanna be wrecking my engine with it being my first car
